Awesome Color: Viva Radio’s Me + You Pt. 73

Awesome Color

Now, I’ve never been to Detroit, but that doesn’t mean I haven’t heard things. Things like the astounding number of vacant homes, and how the bears are beginning roam freely within city limits. With the abandonment from the auto industry, it seems like there would be plenty of time to sit around and drink beer. I don’t know much about the background of Awesome Color, but it certainly seems a viable direction — for three grizzly, grimy dudes to decide to channel their collective energy wrought from the gray, dreary city into some sludgy sort of garage rock. Blitzen Trapper Announces Tour and New Release

Blitzen Trapper

Eric Earley and his band of merry men known as Blitzen Trapper are set to release their fifth studio album, Destroyer Of The Void, on June 8th via Sub Pop Records. It’s been two years since their debut at Sub Pop with their critically acclaimed Furr, and of course during we were fortunate enough to receive Black River Killer EP as well. But now the time has come! There is no doubt in the western world that this is one of the most highly anticipated albums of 2010. The pressure is on. But, as they have failed to let us down in the past, the stage is set for yet another amazing release. Read More »Blitzen Trapper Announces Tour and New Release

The Rest announce “Cried Wolf” Book/EP Release & “Everyone All At Once” International Release

rest

The Rest had a wonderful 2009. They self released their sophomore album Everyone All At Once to much critical acclaim and thus ended up on numerous “Best Of” list for the year. They sold out shows in their hometown of Toronto, Canada. They dropped another E.P., WOW, to even greater critical ass kissing awesomeness. All the while, they built a massive fan base not only in the Ontario underworld, but across the globe. And with only three and half months into the current year, the gang is already showing promise for an even more eventful 2010. Carissa’s Wierd To Reissue on Hardly Art

carissas-wierd

As one of the few individuals to own a copy of Ugly But Honest, You Should Be At Home Here and Songs About Leaving by Carissa’s Wierd (sic), let alone ALL THREE, including their super-duper rare tour album, Scrap Book, it’s only with a hint of sadness that I relay to you the news that Hardly Art will reissue all three of the band’s proper albums. But the probable decline in value of rarities is far below the excitement I have for all the world who has yet to experience what, in my opinion, is one of the most under-appreciated, well-deserved bands ever to have existed. Imaginary SXSW Sendoff: A 3IG Hootenanny

zebras

Has it really been two years since I was last at SXSW? Time sure does fly! The festival is back and likely crazier and more sponsored than ever. And I’m only slightly jealous of all the fun thousands of people will have as they descend upon Austin. I had some good times at SXSW ’07 and ’08, from working with the folks at The Current from Minneapolis to witnessing the joint Hootenanny production at Lovejoy’s sponsored by Three Imaginary Girls and Magic Marker Records (above photo by me, of The Zebras, at the event). Well, 3IG is back and this time they’re bringing the Hootenanny to Seattle for big ol’ sendoff party.Read More »Imaginary SXSW Sendoff: A 3IG Hootenanny

13 Bands You Should See At Sasquatch 2010

sasquatch-festival-2010

The 2010 Sasquatch Festival line-up was announced last week and after perusing the list a few times, I started to hone in on who the hot bands will (or, better yet, should) be. Now, festivals for me are all about camping out at a stage for several bands before moving on to another, but I figured I’d throw that trend to the wind for this post. My second disclaimer; before you point out that I’m recommending the small folk, understand that I also tend to shun the big guns — those artists it seems like EVERYONE will be seeing. Microphones Live in Anacortes 2010

Farewell: Anacortes All-Ages Venue Department Of Safety

This is it, the last call. The last show. And yet it’s a first for me; my first time visiting the Department Of Safety in Anacortes. The evening began with a brief drive along dark highways to the town known most, perhaps, for its ferry system connecting mainland Washington with the San Juan Islands. Eight years before, in 2002, the Department Of Safety opened with a show featuring performances from Karl Blau, P:Ano, and, among others, Microphones. This night would be quite similar, though also on the bill was LAKE and Arrington de Dionyso (of Old Time Relijun).

Label Spotlight: Beko Records

beko-records

Modern forms of communication, if anything, have allowed the ability to spread awareness like wildfire. Case in point, this morning. Catching up on recent tweets, I noticed a link from Acid House Kings to a little something called Beko Records. I visited the site, downloaded all 25 current digital singles from the label, and began the task of checking them all out. Now I’m writing about it to let you know. And who knows where you’ll take it. So we begin.
