On Air at KSVR: February 15, 2013 Playlist

I broke the rules this week on my very unoriginally titled radio show on KSVR Mount Vernon. The Indie Music Show featured a few tracks that are, quite distinctly, not even close to being indie. And one of them kicked off the show. It’s the new track by David Bowie called “Where Are We Now?” Shortly thereafter, I crossed the ocean for a set from France, where I played a track by famed singer and Masculin Feminin actress Chantal Goya and another by Serge Gainsbourg.

The Knife: A Tooth For An Eye (Stream)

The Knife

Everybody is freaking out about The Knife‘s forthcoming LP, Shaking The Habitual and it all makes perfect sense. Silent Shout, their most recent LP, not only wooed countless people to the band, it topped many year-end lists. That was back in 2006, seven years ago. In fact, it was seven years and two days ago that Pitchfork gave that record a whopping 8.6. Read More »The Knife: A Tooth For An Eye (Stream)

Building a 2 meter ham radio antenna

On Air at KSVR Mount Vernon: February 8, 2013

Before I took over, per the norm, host Chef Stuarto brought me on air to discuss the coming show. He asked if there was a highlight track I wanted to talk about. The discussion centered around the first track I would play that evening – Jacco Gardner’s “The Ballad of Little Jane”, which I likened to a modern rendition of The Beatles’ later-era.

Youth Lagoon’s “Dropla” Brings Comfort After Sorrow

Youth Lagoon

“Dropla” is the first single to be released off Youth Lagoon‘s forthcoming sophomore LP, Wondrous Bughouse and it lives up to the greatness of Trevor Powers’ phenomenal debut. However, if you were expecting Powers to pick up right where The Year of Hibernation left off, you are mistaken. “Dropla” is substantially more sophisticated, deep and heartfelt. Jacco Gardner Releases Debut LP “Cabinet of Curiosities” Next Week

Jacco Gardner

Jacco Gardner is a Dutch multi-instrumentalist whose baroque pop reminisces of late-era Beatles or anything by The Zombies. Adorned in hints of psychedelic pop, you’ll find everything from a harpsichord to a flute within Gardner’s new track “The Ballad of Little Jane”. This psych element comes through in his video for “Where Will You Go” as well; pairing vibrant colors with old footage. The sound is classic, for sure. Sharon Van Etten on the Record Player

On Air at KSVR Mount Vernon: February 1, 2013 Playlist

I’ve been in a weird place musically of late. I’m a bit scattered, all over the map. My affinity for light, soft and playful folk has returned, but I’m also crushing on slacker pop and dream pop at the moment. Pretty hard, thank to bands like Darlings and Indians. I shouldn’t be surprised at this disjointedness; I have always had diverse desires when it comes to music and varied playlists like this one are a common occurrence.

Indians: I Am Haunted (Video)

Indians Band from Denmark

Last year, we saw a slew of videos that featured band members being killed in one gruesome fashion or another. Looks like we’re kicking of 2013 in a similar manner; “I Am Haunted” finds Indians front-man Søren Løkke Juul being tormented and tortured by a woman whose face remains, for the most part, hidden from view. The camera swirls around the basement space, where Juul is tied to a chair, slowly becoming more and more bruised and bloody.

Gathered Ghosts Return with LP “Decoration Haze”

Gathered Ghosts

I recall my final months at KZUU, way back in mid-2006. What time I spent in the old studio allowed me to discover bands that even today remain among my favorites. Leaving was hard, as I felt so connected with the place. Why this reminiscence? Because Gathered Ghosts member Andreanna Wilson will be experiencing the same thing this year. Somewhat funny, then, that the first song I latch onto from their forthcoming LP Decoration Haze is “Stay Where You Are (pt. 2)”. Read More »Gathered Ghosts Return with LP “Decoration Haze”
