Fredrik: Trilogi [Album Review]

fredrik

The duo of Lindefelt and Fredrik have come a long way since their early work together under their indie pop guise of The Lovekevins. With two entirely too brief EPs, the band transformed into The LK again with Lindefelt at the helm. This was the duo’s first foray into noise-pop, and the single Private Life Of A Cat was our introduction to their new sound. That in itself would lead directly into the band’s first LP, Vs. The Snow. Up to, and including, that album, the band had begun to formulate something very special in the partnership between the two musicians, and it was fully realized when the other stepped into the limelight in their new project, simply dubbed Fredrik. Francis: I Was Never Bored At All [mp3]

francis

Francis has been hard at work on a new album and, given a first listen to their new single, it’s easy to hear this band has made some tremendous strides forward. But first, take a step back. Their self-titled EP from 2009 was pretty solid. It allowed them to shine in a very unique manner – being a band that took Sweden into a tavern and got it so hopped up on booze that a drunken punk side began to show. It had sloppy moments, but it merely enhanced the music. “I Was Never Bored At All”, the band’s new song, is not what you’d expect from the previous description. Not at all. Shout Out Louds: Walls [Video]

shout-out-louds

There is a time and place for a band like the pop frenzied Shout Out Louds. And that time is obviously now. Their latest single “Walls” is a verbal demonstration and display of affection toward the ever-changing times being seen throughout the world. There is an independent spirit raging in the youth of now. Kids want action! They want hot-sauced moodiness and a deranged sense of anti-socialism. That’s just the way it is. And this band is the Swedish ambassadors to the new Greenwich or Ashbury crowds of yester-years. Read More »Shout Out Louds: Walls [Video]

Lars Ludvig Löfgren

Lars Ludvig Löfgren: Heterochromia [Album Review]

There’s something a little off-kilter about Lars Ludvig Löfgren and his album Heterochromia. With a base that encompasses a fairly common pop sound, he adds in an indistinct oddity that you might not notice right off the bat; it’s a trait that works well with the album title. Löfgren’s music fits the upbeat nature of pop, but often finds the beats lagging slightly, at least early on. “Canadian Maple Leafs” and “Across Your House” open the album on a laid-back note before “Round Your Heart” removes any preconceptions about the band. The song is unquestionably catchy.

The Lovekevins: Blame The English [7″ Review]

lovekevins

Why does Sweden stand out more than other countries when it comes to laying down pop tracks? The Swedes definitely know how to make pop music. The Lovekevins are a light bouncy pop group from Malmo, Sweden and such heritage means beautifully crafted pop songs. This Blame the English 7-inch single comes with four tracks and album info provided in English, Russian and French. Read More »The Lovekevins: Blame The English [7″ Review]

My Autumn Sons: Save Me [Video]

my_autumn_sons

Such a simple concept, this video for My Autumn Sons‘ “Save Me”. Filtered through some sort of pop art thermal thingy, or something along those lines, the video merely follows a few kids as they walk down the street, showing off for the camera and doing what little boys do. My Autumn Sons is my lastest find from Series II Records, who released their album Perfect earlier this year. Read More »My Autumn Sons: Save Me [Video]

Chuck Morgan: This Spring Is [Video]

chuck_morgan

“This Spring Is” by Gothenburg’s Chuck Morgan is a simple acoustic song with hidden complexities. Morgan is good at creating plain pop melodies and weaving in various experimental pop elements behind the common singer/songwriter acoustic plus vocals make-up. Locked on a balcony, this video finds Morgan mulling over a favorite season. The cinematography is a play on focus and the purposeful instability in the camera merely heightens the video’s creativity. Read More »Chuck Morgan: This Spring Is [Video]

Christopher Öström: Audio Loading, Please Wait… [Album Review]

chirstopher-ostrom

Christopher Öström is yet another great underground Swedish artist to find his way into the Series II Records family. Öström’s music leans toward the electronic side of folk pop and his romantic vocals find Audio Loading, Please Wait… joining the ranks of artists like Electric President. But Audio Loading is much more twee. Read More »Christopher Öström: Audio Loading, Please Wait… [Album Review]

[ingenting] – Dina händer är fulla av blommor [Video]

ingenting

Oh I’m loving this! It’s the new video by (what seems like) Sweden’s only native-tongue-singing band [ingenting]. The song is “Dina händer är fulla av blommor” and it’s one of their catchiest yet, easily matching prior favorites like “Syster dyster”, “Har kommer solen” and “Slapp Inb Solen”. A loose, very poor translation (no thanks to very poor online translation systems) could be “In Your Hands Full Of Blossoms” or possibly even “Your Hands Are Full Of Blossoms”. It’s a sad song, one full of longing and loss. The theme is carried through the video quite nicely, making my forthcoming compilation of the year’s best videos even harder to pare down.
