For those of you familiar with Dan Bejar and his work in both Destroyer and The New Pornographers, this song may come as a bit of a shock. It’s damn near electronic! This isn’t the Dan Bejar we know and love… or is it? Leave it to JC/DC to spend a solid year-and-a-half production time reinventing Bejar as an off-beat, near contemporary artist. The Mare: I’m So Happy [Video]

Buried deep in my inbox was this video for “I’m So Happy” by The Mare. It’s a super upbeat, wildly fun indie pop song from, yes, another great Swedish band. The video features plenty of dancing, a stuffed giraffe, and great colors. The song’s title is perfect; not only does the band continuously repeat the words I’m so happy, it’s also super infectious. Blood Oranges: The French Word for Love [Video]

Blood Oranges is an energetic pop band from London featuring plenty of synth keys and jangly guitars. “The French Word For Love” is my introduction to this band, and it’s probably yours as well. The song is the title track to their debut single, which drops next week via Things To Make And Do Records. For now, we just have this fun little video, which introduces us to the band piece by piece, angle by angle. They’ve been getting Los Campesinos references, but I think Blood Oranges has less of that punky edge. Amongst the thousands of hipsters, anti-hipsters, and anti-anti-hipsters roaming around the City of Roses banging away at whatever obscure instrument they can grasp with a tall boy of PBR in their hand, two of the finest individuals to burst out from the scene might be that very scene’s polar opposites. The multitasking duo Hosannas are fully fledged artists who find their niche in making keyboard frenzied indie rock lullabies like those found on their latest record Together. Maserati [Feature]

Odd that this, Pyramid Of The Sun, is my first experience of the epic Maserati. It’s not with ignorance, too; their name has been uttered in my direction from many an enthusiast. Thus I do not feel competent in doing an album review, as I have no basis of comparison – and that is precisely what a long-time fan would want. So a brief feature, then. Pyramid Of The Sun is a masterful blend of wild guitar riffs, borderline electronica, and the intoxicating hint of psychedelia. And “Oaxaca” is the perfect example of all three. Gunslinger: Early Volumes 1 [Album Review]

What in the sweet hell is going on here? Who is this Gunslinger and how has he somehow managed to infiltrate the world of regular atmospheric rock and roll, and turn it into a danceable bit of electronica that never really seems to lose its artistic touch. If something doesn’t seem just right about Early Volumes 1, it’s only because all the perquisites of regular dance music has suddenly take a strange and crazy original turn towards indie rock, and collided with a massive soundscape of very fresh sounds.
