Emmalee Crane: Crux [Album Reveiw]

Emmalee Crane

Crux by Emmalee Crane is one of those ethereal atmospheric albums that you’d think would have a welcome home alongside masters like Windy & Carl on Kranky Records, but they find themselves on a small but budding San Francisco label The Streetlight Farm. Crux matches the power of Kranky’s drone-worthy artists, from the aforementioned to the excellence of Greg Davis and Gregg Kowalsky. And in that manner alone, Crux is an absolute success. National Beekeepers Society: Pawn Shop Etiquette [Album Review]

National Beekeepers Society

The National Beekeepers Society‘s style is sort of rough around the edges, but sets itself over happy-go-lucky melodies. It’s been done before, and can create a rather sketchy scenario. But, their album Pawn Shop Etiquette is proof that these guys have mastered where so many have failed. They deep sea dive into the vast “sort of punk, but not really” ocean that can be devastating and as dried up as Dennis Miller’s sense of humor. Eva & The Heartmaker: Let’s Keep This Up Forever [Album Review]

Eva & The Heartmaker

There’s a classic backing to the music Eva & The Heartmaker create; part soul, part pop, and, yeah, toss in a bit of rock as well. If you’re looking for something groundbreaking, Let’s Keep This Up Forever is not likely to satisfy your taste buds, but if you dig that classic mainstream pop sound circa the late 60s and early 70s, you’ll be right at home with Eva. Hotpants Romance: It’s A Heatwave [Album Review]

Hotpants Romance

Hotpants Romance are so perfectly strange they’re almost hard to comprehend. They boast their work as “three girls, three years, three chords”. They really are as simple as that on the surface. Yet, there are so many things from their album It’s A Heatwave that are shiny, bright, and utterly complicated in the most splendid of ways. Laura, Lowri, and Kate seem to enjoy the frame of mind and sound they have developed by the large amount of energy they exude through each track. Black Feather: Silhouette [Album Review]

Black Feather

Consider expectations defied. Black Feather seemed like such a folk-worthy name; to a somewhat minor extent, Black Feather fulfills folk sensibilities, but the emphasis is minor. The same can be said for pop, though to an even lesser extent. Where this band comes full circle, however is in combining these two genres with experimentation. There’s a weighty portion of eclecticism here that simply cannot be denied. Read More »Black Feather: Silhouette [Album Review]

Afternoon Naps: Parade [Album Review]

Afternoon Naps

This may come as a surprise: Ohio is a hot spot for up-and-coming indie pop artists. There’s Pomegranates out of Cincinnati and Bears in Cleveland. Rounding out the power trio is Cleveland’s Afternoon Naps. Catchy melodies and memorable vocal hooks can be found throughout their sophomore release, Parades. But there’s much more behind the music of Afternoon Naps that makes them one of the most promising pop bands around. Read More »Afternoon Naps: Parade [Album Review]

Headlights: Kill Them With Kindness [Album Review]

HeadlightsKill Them With Kindness comes with incredible hype. So, what everyone wishes to know is whether or not the album lives up to said hype. When it comes down to the answer, it all depends on the individual and their expectations of the band, their personal musical preferences, and their particular mood at the time of their first listen… second listen, third listen, etc.
