Today I’m looking back 20 years and counting down my top 20 albums of 2003. In this first part, I’ll be looking at 20 down to 11. As we reach the 20th anniversary of the albums released in 2003, it’s hard not to look back on this particular year as a crucial moment in indie…

My Top 10 Best Albums of 2021
I wasn’t sure I would do a best of list, but here I am, compiling it now. These are always a little tricky, as the moment I hit “Publish” something inevitably changes. It drives the perfectionist in me nuts. Alas, what can you do? I present to you my Best of 2021 list. Here are…
My Top 10 Record Spins of 2021
I spent more time dropping the needle in 2021 than ever before. In fact, I tracked it! I played close to 1,500 records last year, counting records played once or over a dozen times. Rather than doing a year-end “best of” list, which is highly subjective and tends to change the day after hitting Publish,…
Damien Jurado Teases Two from Forthcoming LP The Monster Who Hated Pennsylvania
This week, Damien Jurado gave us the second track from his forthcoming LP The Monster Who Hated Pennsylvania. The new track is called “Tom” and like the previously released “Helena” and every other track on the new record, it tells an imagined story of a person crafted by Jurado.

Each year I shun Christmas music like it’s the plague. It begins too early, is far too repetitive, and, quite frankly, is a bit boring. That is, until this year. It began with “The Week Between”, a new track off One Christmas at a Time, an LP that finds Jonathan Coulton and John Roderick (The…
Damien Jurado: Kalla Hus (Video)
Damien Jurado may be a big fan of Christmas, but there’s one thing he hasn’t done since he began his solo songwriting career in the mid 1990s: write and record an original Christmas song. Well that has changed and Jurado can now scratch that off his bucket list. “Kalla Hus” came out earlier this week…
Fense’s Radio Show: November 2, 2012
Brett and I met up a little before 9:30pm at KSVR, spent a few minutes catching up, then organized the selection of records we would play that night. It was a first for me — having a co-host — and it turned out to be a blast. Friday nights from 10pm to midnight can be…
