Damien Jurado

Damien Jurado is a singer, songwriter, and musician from Seattle, Washington who has been recording and releasing music under his own name since the 1990s. His music is most often likened to indie folk, flirting with sub-genres like lo-fi folk, psychedelic folk, and folk rock, among others.

His albums have been released by the likes of Sub Pop, Secretly Canadian, and his own label imprint Maraqopa Records. As of 2023, he has put out close to two dozen studio albums.

Today I’m looking back 20 years and counting down my top 20 albums of 2003. In this first part, I’ll be looking at 20 down to 11. As we reach the 20th anniversary of the albums released in 2003, it’s hard not to look back on this particular year as a crucial moment in indie rock history. For me, cemented in my Junior and Senior year of college, I dove deeper into my obsession with music and expanded my horizons even deeper into indie rock.

It began with “The Week Between”, a new track off One Christmas at a Time, an LP that finds Jonathan Coulton and John Roderick (The Long Winters) collaborating for a full album of original Christmas music.

Damien Jurado may be a big fan of Christmas, but there’s one thing he hasn’t done since he began his solo songwriting career in the mid 1990s: write and record an original Christmas song. Well that has changed and Jurado can now scratch that off his bucket list. “Kalla Hus” came out earlier this week as a digital single.

Brett and I met up a little before 9:30pm at KSVR, spent a few minutes catching up, then organized the selection of records we would play that night. It was a first for me — having a co-host — and it turned out to be a blast. Friday nights from 10pm to midnight can be lonely and I don’t get many calls, so having someone else in the studio to talk to was definitely an enjoyable experience.
