Roch: Lightweight Bipolar Mania [Album Review]

roch

Hip Hop music has less than subtly switched gears from it’s former peddling of brassed out beats over rhythms that are either clever, vulgar, captivating, or all of the above. No, now days hip hop has been branded with a real artistic revolution, as well as some fine examples of diversity by adding elements of R&B, electronica, and even a bit of indie rock in the mix. And a stellar combination of all these elements can be found perfectly on Light Weight Bipolar Mania from the spectacular wordsmith and soul man known as Roch! Fishboy: Alyson Revere [Video]

fishboy

Oh Fishboy, you never fail to amuse. We interviewed Fishboy’s Eric Michener a few months back about his new LP, Classic Creeps, which finally came out this week. Yeah, we’ve been rocking to it since January and can contest to its total awesomeness. Well, in celebration of the release, Michener, aka Fishboy, put together a video for the album’s fifth song, “Alyson Revere”, and it goes a little something like this… Read More »Fishboy: Alyson Revere [Video]

Brontosaurus: Beware [mp3]

brontosaurus

I heard Brontosaurus was a band fans of Black Heart Procession might dig, and after a few listens to their LP Cold Comes to Claim, I’d say that was pretty accurate. The opening track, “Beware” has that epic post rock meets prog rock darkness Black Heart tends to employ, and Brontosaurus make it their own with haunting organs and Califone-style folk vocals. And both Nicholas Kelley and Nicholas Papaleo, the duo behind Brontosaurus, take the lead on those vocals. Read More »Brontosaurus: Beware [mp3]

Francois Peglau: The Imminent Failure of Francois Peglau [Album Review]

francois-peglau

It’s a little difficult to pinpoint the origins of Francois Peglau’s music. It’s pop, but from a cultural standpoint there are a number of influences. The most noticeable being French, you can also hear a little of Peglau’s South American heritage in his music. There’s also a strong hint of his current British home (perhaps inject a light Beatles reference). Read More »Francois Peglau: The Imminent Failure of Francois Peglau [Album Review]

Fredrik: Chrome Cavities [Video]

fredrik

In a video from Fredrik, you know you’re always going to get something a bit different, just like their music. And just like their music, you know it will be a little strange but very good. “Chrome Cavities” continues this pattern, using a play on shadows and color. It features “a vintage British overhead projector, an off-white canvas, scissors, paper, 8 hands and a fishtank full of flammable liquids.” The result is your standard Fredrik genius. 97 Lovers

97 Lovers [Feature]

The lovely land in the United Kingdom known as Exeter has become a hot spot for lo-fi indie pop. It is also the home of the former cult favorite Thrilled Skinny, so the subtly beautiful melodies may not be the best branding of the area’s musical taste. Most recently, however, a little group has been kicking up dust in the whiskey stained carpets of the area’s new wave influenced punk scene. Introducing: 97 Lovers. Their style is straight from the early 80’s. But, their topical take on the current state of the world is so in the now!

Coulter: At The End Of The Day [mp3]

coulter

Coulter‘s last LP had a few similarities to The Smiths, and those traits can also be found on his new one, Grip Fast. However, the similarities aren’t as plentiful, and Coulter Leslie is starting to create his own sound. Again, he worked with Seattle producer and mixer Erik Blood (whose work includes the same for The Moondoggies, The Lights, and The Tea Cozies to name a few).
