The lovely land in the United Kingdom known as Exeter has become a hot spot for lo-fi indie pop. It is also the home of the former cult favorite Thrilled Skinny, so the subtly beautiful melodies may not be the best branding of the area’s musical taste. Most recently, however, a little group has been kicking up dust in the whiskey stained carpets of the area’s new wave influenced punk scene. Introducing: 97 Lovers. Their style is straight from the early 80’s. But, their topical take on the current state of the world is so in the now!
Although 97 Lovers are not new to the Exeter scene, they are only now beginning to gather the recognition they deserve. With their latest single “Modern Condition”, a playful yet serious stab at the effects of social networking on our brains, garnering buzz and praise at their numerous gigs across the United Kingdom, this is a band that has all the essential elements to break on through to any given side they shall choose.
97 Lovers are currently working on their highly anticipated debut EP. With so much attention being thrown their way for their ecstatic live performances, it is definitely exciting to see how the group’s sound will come out in a mixed session. So for now, indulge yourself “Modern Condition”, and know that the condition a group like this can cause is one that will have you not caring if they ever find a cure for such a sweet sounding disease.
Note that in the years since, 97 Lovers can now be found under the name Interiors.
