Proud Simon: Newspaper Boat [Video Review]

Proud Simon

Written by Fense

Proud Simon makes overtly accessible indie pop music. At least initially it’s clean, it’s smooth — contemporary almost — and it doesn’t push any boundaries. But as their recent release, Night Of Criminals continues past the first few tracks, they shed some of these elements. That being said, Proud Simon is definitely catchy and fun, as seen on their in-studio video for “Newspaper Boat”. Read More »Proud Simon: Newspaper Boat [Video Review]

My Cousin I Bid You Farewell: Style & Grace [Video]

My Cousin I Bid You Farewell

Written by Fense

Some of the best music videos aren’t really that, they’re simply visual accompaniment to the supporting audio. Small independent bands that utilize filmed visual elements in their performances, likewise, tend to possess something special. While I’m not sure if My Cousin I Bid You Farewell has video elements in their performances, they do fit the former statement in their video accompaniment to “Style & Grace”. The Seaworthies: Flies On The Wall [Video]

Written by Fense

It’s been a while since I’ve written anything about The Seaworthies. I’ve known about the band for some time and I’ve more than appreciated the music they’ve made all these years, even when they were known by the moniker Moon Turn The Tides. So, what prompted this new little feature? No, unfortunately there are no new tunes out there, and I’m not really sure if there are plans for any new tunes in the near future.

Chad VanGaalen: Molten Light [Video]

Chad VanGaalen

Written by Fense

The animation in the video for “Molten Light” by Chad VanGaalen reminds me a lot of the animation signature of the late 80s and early 90s. You know the kind — gross for the sake of being gross; a sort of, well, faux art. There were plenty of bands from that era that slapped the crap on their album covers — Ugly Kid Joe and Big Black are a few that come to mind. But here, there’s a key “fortunate” element, and that is its association with the great music of Chad VanGaalen. Read More »Chad VanGaalen: Molten Light [Video]

Canadian Invasion: Three Cheers For The Invisible Hand [Video]

Canadian Invasion

Written by Fense

My god man! Did someone declare 2008 the year of the lovable pop gem yet? If not, I may just have to do it because this year has seen so many great bands release so many great tunes, and the latest to succumb to the awesome curse is Canadian Invasion with their song “Three Cheers For The Invisible Hand”. It joins the ranks of Pomegranates, Fredrik, Grand Archives, The New Year and many, many more than I’m sure I’ll kick myself later for forgeting — all these bands have dished out great pop songs this year. Michael Zapruder: Ads For Feelings [Video]

Michael Zapruder

Written by Fense

I’m a bit sad. Yesterday, the 6th of November, was my one month anniversary at my new job. I really enjoy my work and the people I work with, but it means I must rent a room in the small town of Edison (at a really great house with a really great roommate) and I am only able to be in Seattle Friday evening through Sunday early afternoon, when I can return to my condo in Ballard, where I live on weekends (and where my girlfriend lives all week). It’s sad because it means I miss out on all the great shows that happen in Seattle — case in point, Michael Zapruder (MySpace), slated to play Sunset Tavern this Sunday. Disasteradio: Awesome Feelings [Video]

Disasteradio

Written by Fense

Woah. Talk about channeling 80s synth pop! Disasteradio is Luke Rowell, a name that sounds suspiciously like you growl, and the music he makes sounds suspiciously 80s. But like 80s synth pop, it comes with the glorious flare of colorfully flashy synth lines, computerized tidbits, and all the swank a wacky early twenty-something male can muster out of the nether regions of… well, you know what I’m getting at. Alan Cohen Experience: The Obama Groove [Video]

Alan Cohen Experience

Written by Fense

Alan Cohen Experience came to me about a year ago when I was sent the group’s debut LP. Now they’ve got a new EP and a little political ditty. So, it’s fitting that this feature goes up today, November 4, the day we will vote a new man into office. Along with Cohen, I sure hope Obama is the man the country chooses. So, before I go any further, let me say this: if you’re in the states, please go vote (I can only hope you’ll vote for Obama, but even if you’re an McCain supporter — or even an Nader supporter — it’s your duty).
