The Besnard Lakes: Are The Dark Horse [Album Review]

The Besnard Lakes

The Besnard Lakes seem to have taken everyone by surprise; their music blends drone-y shoegaze and prog-rock with the playfulness of lightly orchestrated indie-pop. These elements make Are The Dark Horse one of the best comprehensive albums of 2007. Songs like “Because Tonight” are instantly classic in nature—The Besnard Lakes’ ability to dictate between sophisticated and precise string arrangements, and drone-heavy prog-rock give them an edge in a somewhat polluted independent music scene. AristeiA: AristeiA EP [Album Review]

AristeiA

Dear AristeiA,

It’s been too long. I’ve missed you. There’s a laundry list of things I’ve wanted to say but haven’t in the past year. I’ve been busy. Things are good; I just get distracted. I’m sorry I haven’t made it down to Portland to see any of your amazing shows and I’m sorry we haven’t spoken in a while. I’d like to take a moment and rectify that because, despite my being vacant, I do have strong feelings for you. Read More »AristeiA: AristeiA EP [Album Review]

Forest Fire: Fortune Teller [Track]

Forest Fire

Earning best album of the year is a notable feat, one not to take lightly. But to garner such a cherished spot, and that from a noted collective like La Blogoteque, without having a “proper” release is something else altogether. Well, Forest Fire is ready to give Survival, the recipient of La Blogoteque’s best album of 2008, that proper release via new label Infinite Best. And the first single off the album is “Fortune Teller”. Read More »Forest Fire: Fortune Teller [Track]

Summer Cats: Super [Video]

Summer Cats

Summer Cats‘ new LP, Songs For Tuesday, is backed with lovable indie pop gems like “Lonely Planet”, “Hey You” and “Super”. After dropping a video last year for “Lonely Planet”, Summer Cats now do the same for “Super”, one of the more infectious songs off the Australian pop band’s latest. Where “Lonely Planet” merely featured people dancing around, this one has more of a storyline. There’s plenty to love here, from people with cat faces (just paint), to the exquisite French car, to the adorable kitten at the end. Read More »Summer Cats: Super [Video]

The Zookeepers: Darling [Video]

The Zookeepers

I’m usually opposed to covering videos which simply show the band performing their song unless there’s something unique about the performance — say, like a special live version or video session. Initially I thought “Darling” by The Zookeepers would be the former; after all, it’s the band performing their song… sort of. But not really. It’s just a group of kids dicking around on the beach with instruments and fireworks. And boy does that bring back memories. Read More »The Zookeepers: Darling [Video]

Autopilot Is For Lovers: To The Wolves [Album Review]

Autopilot Is For Lovers

Portland is bustling with great new bands. Last year it was Meyercord and The Old Believers. Just last week it was Ah Holly Fam’ly. Now it’s Autopilot Is For Lovers, a band that is filled with heavy vibrato and folk-y Americana. Select songs provide focus on specific instruments like banjo and accordion, while others find the band expanding to several instruments. The Cloud I’m Under: Future Games [Video]

The Cloud I'm Under

I recall getting lost as a child at night in a mid-80s fair, packed full of looming dark shapes and carnies with poor teeth. The video for “Future Games” brings back those memories — it’s merely modern home video of an evening at the fair. The Cloud I’m Under just released a free EP titled Ears Ringing/Hearts Full/Pockets Empty, an album filled with cool electro-synth-pop including “Future Games” and “Out At Mars”. Le Loup: Beach Town [Track Review]

Le Loup

It’s been two long years since any news has come forth from the Baltimore collective Le Loup, fronted by the once tormented Sam Simkoff. Two years is a very long time — enough time for maturity to progress, lifestyles to change, personalities to evolve. And that’s what we’re given with the first single off Le Loup’s upcoming sophomore LP, Family; a sound that holds the vibrant avant-garde nature of Le Loup’s debut, but metamorphosed into something that would ultimately make Darwin proud.
