Unlikely Friends Release Solid Gold Cowboy on Jigsaw Records
Let’s take a trip back in time. The year is 2006, and FensePost is only a few months old. I stumble upon a newly relocated indiepop artist called BOAT. The band moved from Chicago to Seattle and landed a spot on the Magic Marker Records roster for their debut LP Songs That You Might Not Like. Vinyl Only Night on KSVR
As you may already know, but I’ll state it nonetheless for those who do not, I have a weekly radio show on KSVR Mount Vernon, KSVU Hamilton and KSJU Friday Harbor. You can tune in via the respective dial pinpoints if you live within those townships, or you can stream from KSVR.org. We will be hosting our pledge drive in April, so I thought I’d kick things off by doing something no other station in Skagit or (to my knowledge) the surrounding areas does: a vinyl only night.

Can you remember 2006? I can. In particular, I can remember a little Seattle band I discovered as they neared the release of their debut LP, Songs That You Might Not Like. That band was and still is called BOAT. I’ve been a huge fan ever since.
BOAT is now prepared to drop their fifth LP, Pretend To Be Brave. The first 100 who pre-order the new album, available for pre-order in February, will receive a limited edition cassette with digital download of BOAT’s friends covering the new album. BOAT is prepared to release their fourth album, Dress Like Your Idols, in March and we have here the first single from that album. The song is called “(I’ll Beat My Chest Like) King Kong” and it maintains BOAT’s wild throaty vocals, packed with a seemingly self-deprecating sarcasm and a penchant toward pop culture. It maintains those rockin’ guitar riffs and bouncy percussion. It maintains all those lovable rock hooks, catchy as all hell. Yet it’s slightly different from their past three releases — it’s more mature, refined a little bit, almost grown-up.

FensePost Top 50: The Best Albums of 2009
2009 is a tough year to judge. I’ve checked out more albums this year than any year in the past. Well over 1,000. And there have been quite a few great ones as well. When this list began, it had 110 albums. I abandoned my top 33 and 1/3 for 45, and then said “screw it” and upped the number to an even 50. These are the top notch albums of the year, all worthy of praise.

A Retrospective Top 33 and 1/3: Best Albums of 2008
When I compiled my original Best Of 2008 list last December, it was a snow day. The sky dropped about a foot, maybe a foot and a half of fluffy white stuff and we lowly sub-compact drivers could go nowhere. Between ranking albums and locating album art, I took a stroll around town with my camera. The above image comes from that trek. Overall, I was pretty happy with last year’s list but, in revisiting all the albums from 2008, I now see quite a few that I left out.
