Archie Bronson Outfit: Shark’s Tooth [mp3]

Archie Bronson Outfit

Archie Bronson Outfit‘s single “Shark’s Tooth” seems to be set in a time and space completely separate from existence we know. Its drastically elevated tempo is dance-floor worthy, though precisely too high. It is surf music taken to a brand new, quite radical level. Archie Bronson Outfit has this beat-driven euphoria that is sure to whisk you away to a heavenly place buried in your subconscious, where all you care to do is dance until your feet blister and fall apart. A fair warning needs to be given to the mopey, sad youth of today: Do not listen to Archie Bronson Outfit. You might actually learn to enjoy yourself. Golden Ages: Tradition [Album Review]

Golden Ages

On their debut full-length, Tradition, Golden Ages picks up where they left off on last year’s Sitting Softly In The Sea EP. “Waiting” is packed with eccentric electronic experimentation on par with a more melodic, less tribal Animal Collective. What really sets this band apart from its contemporaries is that they take common elements of electronic dance and filter them through an Oz-like world of mystery and bizarre darkness. From the ambient calm to the melodic electro-noise, Golden Ages are pretty much one of a kind. Read More »Golden Ages: Tradition [Album Review]

The National: Bloodbuzz Ohio [mp3]

The National

Isn’t this what you’ve been waiting for, people: a new track from The National!? Man, just when you thought the buzz behind this band would dissipate, they go and hand out a power track like “Bloodbuzz Ohio”. And it leaves people like you and me pining for that deep voice and off-beat percussive drum slap. Oh those piano notes and building guitars — now that’s the stuff! “Bloodbuzz Ohio” has the potential to match the favorites from past albums by The National; yes, we’re talking about you, “Fake Empire” and “Mr. November”. The song is off the band’s new LP, High Violet, which hits soon via 4AD. Read More »The National: Bloodbuzz Ohio [mp3]

Steel Train: Turnpike Ghost [mp3]

Steel Train

Steel Train has been growing in mass appeal over the last couple years. Their work is seen by many as a new stronghold in the mainstream yet somewhat indie rock world. And it’s all with good cause! The exclamation point for their recent success is going to be their upcoming June release, just in time for the summer festival circuit, with previews throughout the spring circuit! The guys have been kind enough to drop their first single for a nice preview of the intense indie hardcore style. “Turnpike Ghost” is a beautiful slice of guitar screeching and cymbal spanking pie that will use its high octane efficiency to demand your attention. Menhirs of Er Grah: Billy Cross’s Daughter [Album Review]

Menhirs of Er Grah

The always musically vigilant singer/songwriter Thom Carter has some stories to tell on his third release as Menhirs of Er Grah, Billy Cross’s Daughter. And they are amongst the best he has even told. Thom has announced that he has tried to “bury his Eric Clapton CD’s in a casket under the sea”. But, even he will admit that he still has subliminal nods to the king of Cream throughout this amazing album. Read More »Menhirs of Er Grah: Billy Cross’s Daughter [Album Review]

Justin Ripley [Demo Reel]

Justin Ripley

Not all too long ago, I featured an exclusive track by a brand new Seattle band called Salmon Thrasher. Member Justin Ripley recently sent me a homemade album he recorded for close friends and various music types. He dubbed it Just Just, as, well, it was just Justin performing. He wrote the songs, played the instruments, mixed the album… you get the picture. Because it’s not a full-on release release, I’m dubbing it worthy of a Demo Reel. Kadman: These Old Bones [Album Review]

kadman

True folk-pop minimalists are of a rare breed these days. Many folks have become perfectly fond of only accepting Nick Drake and a handful of other Drake ripoffs hanging around. My recommendation: let these conformists have a listen to Kadman’s sophomore release These Old Bones. Let thee be regretful and God forgive them for their ignorance when they hear the awesome sounds of this Baltimore-based threesome. Read More »Kadman: These Old Bones [Album Review]

Lykke Li: Possibility [Video]

lykke-li

Lykke Li is hard at work on her follow-up to 2008’s smash hit Youth Novels. “Possibilities” is off the new album, and it fits Li’s softer, more emotive side. And it is this side that I find most appealing. “Possibility” is directed much like a scene from a David Lynch film; Immediately what comes to mind are his works Mulholland Drive and Inland Empire. It has overlapping video, a cleverly shaky camera, and an itchy focus finger. This works well as the song is shrouded in minimalism. Even the song, with its minimal drone-like organs and echoing vocal reverb, fits the reference — so it’s a bit of a surprise to hear that it’s been cast in the highly popular Twilight film New Moon.
