Wonderful: Rainbow Colors (MP3)

wonderful

After a little hiatus, a little band from Seattle called Wonderful has returned. On their new song, “Rainbow Colors”, we are treated to a colorful style of pop somewhere along the lines of experimental pop outfit Le Loup. But Wonderful came a few years before that band, having released their debut in 2003. “Rainbow Colors” features plenty of chant-like vocalists, heavily thumping drums, and overall colorful vocal and instrumental harmonies.

Fonda: Better Days (MP3)

fonda

Strangely enough, Fonda bypassed my attention back in 2003 when they released their last album, Catching Up To The Future. Primary songwriters David Klotz and Emily Cook have been busy with other projects, from screenwriting (Cook) to being music editor of the show Glee (Klotz). They’re back with a new EP. And thanks to the song “Better Days”, they have my attention now. Read More »Fonda: Better Days (MP3)

Amor de Días: Wild Winter Trees (Video)

amor-de-dias

Alasdair MacLean of The Clientele has a new project, Amor de Días and boy is it good! Like his other band, this one borders on bossa nova. But rather than pop, MacLean instead flirts with folk. “Wild Winter Trees” is soft and beautiful with a lightly strummed guitar and calming vocals. Similarly, the video is simple, showing grainy footage a family playing in the fields. Read More »Amor de Días: Wild Winter Trees (Video)

Letting Up Despite Great Faults

Letting Up Despite Great Faults: Teenage Tide (MP3)

I really dug Letting Up Despite Great Faults‘ debut self-titled LP. In fact, “Our Younger Noise” was one of my favorite videos of 2009. So getting wind of a new EP in the mix was pretty exciting. “Teenage Tide” is off that EP and it finds the band picking up where their debut left off. The song maintains that perfect dream-pop sound, with consistent guitar riffs draped softly in a fuzzy reverb and fronted by airy vocals.

Male Bonding: Bones (mp3)

Male Bonding 11 (2011)

Woah. Did Male Bonding tame a bit since Nothing Hurts? That was only a year ago, yet this sound doesn’t seem nearly as ferocious and feral as the noise-based rock from their 2010 Sub Pop debut. Listen to “Bones”, off the band’s new LP Endless Now out this coming August, next to last year’s Year’s Not Long and you’d think five years of maturity separated the two. Night Driving In Small Towns (Double Take)

night_driving_in_small_towns

Damnit. I knew I was going to forget a phenomenal album in my end of year list for 2010. Serial Killer, by Night Driving In Small Towns easily should have cracked the top 20. But they failed to make my list, not because they didn’t deserve it, but because I simply forgot how great it was. Last year I became obsessed with this band, relating them to Headlights. Today, however, hit the speakers and I did a double-take. Read More »Night Driving In Small Towns (Double Take)
