Stylized in all lowercase, girl in red‘s we fell in love in october is the indie pop project of Norwegian artist Marie Ulven Ringheim. Ringheim is often cited as one of the most promising new artists, and is frequently dubbed as a queer icon.
Their hit song “we fell in love in october” has been out for a few years, but it only recently dropped into my lap, and I just had to pick up the single.
Vinyl Unboxing
Y’all know I’m a fan of physical releases, especially when they’re pressed to vinyl. In my first vinyl unboxing video, I take a look at the packaging of the we fell in love in october vinyl.
This is a reissue on very cool orange, yellow, and brown vinyl that is oh so fitting for fall! There’s not much different from the original, but I note what I’ve been able to find in the video above.
There are still copies available on Amazon.

we fell in love in october
This single comes with the demo as the b-side, and both lean more bedroom pop than the much fuller and plush sounds of girl in red’s debut LP if i could make it go quiet, which was released last year.
Upbeat, romantic, beautiful. Those are the three words I’d use to describe this song, and the video follows suit:
The moment when the pair kiss passionately. Doesn’t it just fill you with a surge of compersion?
This is a truly perfect love song, and the video compliments it to no end. Kinda makes you want fall to be here again…
smoking cigarettes on the roof
you look so pretty and i love the view
don’t bother looking down we’re not going that way
at least i know, i am here to stay
A Brief Look Forward
I’ve given parts of her new LP a listen, and frankly, I don’t think it holds up quite as well. Mostly, it’s because I was expecting something more along the lines of this single rather than elements that blend indie pop and electro pop.
My guess is that it’ll be a grower, though, as there are plenty of great hooks within! “Body And Mind” and “hornylovesickmess” and “midnight love” all blend the two sounds quite nicely.
I wouldn’t be surprised if this LP ends up in my collection in the next few months too.
What’s your favorite modern indie love song?
