Not many people can say this, but I’ve been a fan of Hayden since his 1996 release Everything I Long For. In particular, there was this video for the song “Bad As They Seem” that I saw on a Canadian music show that same year. It wasn’t until college that I finally found and picked up the CD (oddly enough, it was used at Washington State University’s bookstore, The Bookie.
Over the next fifteen years, Hayden (aka Paul Hayden Desser) subsequently released five additional full-length albums, the last being 2009’s phenomenal The Place Where We Lived. However, In Field & Town from 2008 is ultimately my favorite release from Hayden.
Well, he’s back with a new album called Us Alone in February of next year and it promises more of the mopey folk for which Hayden has become known. For those of you unfamiliar with this man, his music is on par with your standard Pedro The Lion and early Crooked Fingers. In other words, you’ll want to hear this.
“Old Dreams” is a new track off Us Alone and quite unlike “Bad As They Seem” off Everything I Long For and “Did I Wake Up Beside You?” off In Field & Town, this new one is very subtle and harmonic. It’s actually, well, quite dreamy.
The song begins with a minute-long introduction; a nice piano and a playful staccato bass line. Hayden comes in with such lovely, soft vocals. It’s a bit of a change, but I for one love it.
Check out “Old Dreams” below and definitely keep an eye out for Us Alone. It’s due out on Arts & Crafts on February 19.
