The Vaselines: I Hate The 80s [mp3]

The Vaselines

Oh man, this is pretty amazing. In their first release in… what, like, 20 years? Yeah, The Vaselines are finally back. Last year Sub Pop gave us a retrospective, an extensive two disc reissue of the band’s previous work. What is most impressive is that despite the distance between their last original release (not reissue) and this one, the band has only changed in years.

Yes, their sound remains strikingly similar. Sure there’s maturity, which is to be expected, of course, but those elements that make songs like “Son Of A Gun” and “Rory Rides Me Raw” and “Jesus Don’t Want Me For A Sunbeam” so excellent remain unchanged. The Vaselines still, after all these years, create some of the most excellent lo-fi pop music around.

Just be careful: a few listens and you’ll be singing along with the chorus: What do you know? You weren’t there / It wasn’t all Duran Duran Duran Duran / You want the truth / Well this is it / I hate the 80s cause the 80s were shit.

“I Hate The 80s” is off the bands NEW album, Sex With An X, out soon on Sub Pop Records.

Oh how I love the Vaselines…possibly my favorite band. I was very nervous while listening to this, I have to admit….
