Parlour Steps: The Hidden Names [Album Review]

Parlour Steps

Parlour Steps front-man Caleb Stull has this breathy quality to his vocals on opening track “As The World Turned Out” that, when backed by his female vocal counterpart, catches the attention immediately. The Hidden Names opens on an irrefutable high point whose edgy pop/rock clash has an upbeat quality that pushes it even further. It makes for a difficult follow-up for the rest of the album. The good news: Parlour Steps delivers. Read More »Parlour Steps: The Hidden Names [Album Review]

Sin Fang Bous to Tour the Northwest with Múm

Sin Fang Bous

When it comes to music, Iceland is known to be a little out there. Experimentation is nothing new, and the country’s own Sin Fang Bous is no different. The solo project of Sindri Mar Sigfusson, Sin Fang Bous’ debut experimental pop album, Clangour, deserves great praise. A fascinating thing it would be to catch Sigfusson live, and that’s exactly what you here in the Pacific Northwest can do as November dawns on us. Sin Fang Bous is hitting the states with Icelandic pals Múm, who are coming here to support their new record, Sing Along To Songs You Don’t Know. El Perro Del Mar: Change Of Heart [Video]

El Perro Del Mar

El Perro Del Mar‘s video for “Change Of Heart” is an easy contender for video of the year, and it takes only a few seconds to come to that conclusion. Filmed in a single take, the video features two men who look to be contenders for Rocky Horror Picture Show 2010: Rocky Cloned. The acrobatics they perform are pretty astounding, and would be so whether they were scantily clad and covered in gold paint or not. Read More »El Perro Del Mar: Change Of Heart [Video]

Kings Of Convenience: Boat Behind [Video]

kings_of_convenience

So we meet again after several years / after several years of separation begins Kings Of Convenience‘s new single “Boat Behind”, and it’s the most fitting opening as the band has been on hiatus for about half a decade. As we hit the rainy fall season, “Boat Behind” is the perfect video to induce a nostalgic state, draped with sunny days and open sunroofs and hitchhiking girls. And as one of my all-time favorite bands, coupled with its glorious ending, “Boat Behind” is among the best music videos of the year. Read More »Kings Of Convenience: Boat Behind [Video]

Viva Radio Releases Massive Digital Comp ‘Best Of Me + You Vol. 1’

Deer Tick at Viva Radio

Viva Radio is one of the premier internet radio stations and to develop additional support, they’re giving us a pretty extensive and comprehensive compilation dubbed Best Of Me + You and featuring a total of 57 tracks. Granted, some of the tracks are station IDs and band interviews from the various groups on the comp, but that still leaves a solid quantity of songs from a who’s who collection of indie artists. And, to top it all, each song is an exclusive live take from Viva Radio’s Me + You. Read More »Viva Radio Releases Massive Digital Comp ‘Best Of Me + You Vol. 1’

Tim Williams: I Hit Another Wall [Video]

tim_williams

Tim Williams‘ lovable pop is borderline contemporary, but only to the point of it being accessible to a wider audience than your standard indie pop band. Careful Love, his new album out this week on Dovecote Records, won’t likely be on your parent’s pre-set station on their car radio, but you might find common ground if you pop the CD in while sharing a ride with them. Then again, you could probably say the same about indie sensation Telekinesis. But the two artists share a little more than that. Read More »Tim Williams: I Hit Another Wall [Video]

St. Vincent: Actor [Album Review]

st_vincent

St. Vincent, Brooklyn’s sweetheart Annie Clark, has a style that can suit anyone’s fancy. And Actor is a powerful example of an astonishing effort from Clark to develop down right delightful tunes. It’s the warm coffee in the morning. As well as the ecstasy for an exciting night. If “Laughing With A Mouth of Blood” doesn’t make you feel like break-dancing at your closest Starbucks, there is something seriously wrong with you. “Marrow” should be that sort of cut that leaves you feeling less whole when it is all sang and done. And how can you not feel like taking a candle-lit bath filled with cheap wine when you hear “The Bed”?

If none of these scenarios apply, go ahead and get yourself checked. Read More »St. Vincent: Actor [Album Review]

Avi Buffalo Signs to Sub Pop

avi_buffalo

Avigdor Zahner-Isenberg is a name I cannot easily pronounce, so I’m glad this young songwriter from Long Beach has chosen to go by the moniker Avi Buffalo. The 18-year-old Avigdor has made music under this guise for three years and with a few shows under the belt, expanded the project to a full-on group. With Aaron Embry at the production wheel, Avi Buffalo began recording their first record. More stuf happened… you know, this and that… and then Sub Pop came into the picture. For realsies. Frightened Rabbit: Swim Until You Can’t See Land [Video]

Frightened Rabbit

Oh I like this. Frightened Rabbit is slated to release a new single in mid-November on FatCat Records, and “Swim Until You Can’t See Land” is the a-side. Its a deep and powerful song, filled with a fair share of repetition and immense emotion – yet the song is wholeheartedly upbeat. The focus is Scott Hutchinson and his deep melodic vocals; the dark performance hall and flashlight-lighting provide an excellent effect. You might miss it the first listen, but “Swim Until You Can’t See Land” has a stunning string arrangement by label-mates Hauschka. Read More »Frightened Rabbit: Swim Until You Can’t See Land [Video]

Built By Snow: Mega [Album Review]

Built By Snow

Built By Snow is certainly a strange name for a band that backs instrumentals with bits and sounds that make reference to old Super Mario or Dig Dug bites (your mother would have killed if you got snow near the game system). But, Mega would have to be a perfect title then – since Mega Man is the undisputed best game ever! The music is pop punk relished, but it’s the aforementioned references to the world of video games that is truly intriguing. If Ms. Pac Man and Donkey Kong were to take ecstasy and birth a digitized child, this album would be the after birth of that disturbing scenario. Read More »Built By Snow: Mega [Album Review]
