Lymbyc Systym: Shutter Release [Album Review]

lymbyc_systym

Lymbyc System has always given the impression of being directly related to Talkdemonic. Like Kevin O’Connor’s group, this instrumental duo places great emphasis on a hefty drum beat. This beat is as much in the forefront as the music that accompanies it – not typically the case in music, as percussion is often utilized as a support to everything else. The band’s latest album, Shutter Release, finds the band expanding in all areas of sound, a progression not expected from a mere duo. Read More »Lymbyc Systym: Shutter Release [Album Review]

Empire! Empire! (I Was A Lonely Estate) [Feature]

empire_empire_i_was_a_lonely_state

Influenced by late 90s emo, prior to its mass popularization, Empire! Empire! (I Was A Lonely Estate) brings back the genre’s best traits. Lacking the whiny “pity me, I’m depressed” elements of what would soon follow, this band reaches back to the greats like Appleseed Cast in their early days and, in particular, Mineral. This is all readily available information; true to the genre, they wear their influences on their sleeves. Like these influences, the instrumentation is a fairly low-key rendition of highly melodic post-shoegaze mixed with flat, dissonant vocals belted out through tired emotive lungs. Read More »Empire! Rajiv Patel [Feature Artist]

rajiv_patel

Watching Rajiv Patel perform live is like watching a chemist develop everlasting cures. His “bath-time friendly” instrumentals brush past his fingertips with perfect precision and a tremendous sense of duty to the music he loves and cherishes. Upbeat, yet extremely mellow, there is a strange sense of strong-willed humanity in his sound. It’s as if a charismatic storm of ingenuity hovers over this eccentric but well-rounded guitarist’s head. Read More »Rajiv Patel [Feature Artist]

King of Rocksprings: The Milkman Vs. The Postman [Album Review]

king_of_rocksprings

Scott Sosebee is a king. Of what you might ask? Well, aside from being the undisputed King of Rocksprings, he is also a royal attribute when it comes to pushing a punk rock influence into the indie world. And with a bit of comedic relief involved, his debut album The Milkman Vs. The Postman is reminiscent of early Bobby Joe Ebola & The Children Macknuggits. Of course, these songs have a premise and a real sense of being. But, their sense of human rings the loudest. Read More »King of Rocksprings: The Milkman Vs. The Postman [Album Review]

Japandroids: Live at Chop Suey

japandroids

Japandroids played the last show of their U.S. tour at Chop Suey last Tuesday evening to an enthusiastic crowd. Before starting the set, guitarist Brian King asked the audience to “come down here and get wild.” If the crowd was a little hesitant at first, King and drummer David Prowse more than made up for it with “The Boys are Leaving Town”, complete with head-banging and a wind machine that made King look as if he was in the midst of a photo shoot. Cloud Cult Drops A 2xLP Reissue Today: Stream Select Songs Here!

cloud-cult

Not all that long ago, I noted how Cloud Cult‘s music was a phenomenon in and of itself, a movement of cosmic proportions, and an overall championing of positive energy. They had just released their DVD, No One Said It Would Be Easy. Well, the atypical group is back with a new album, a reissue of two early LPs, They Live On The Sun and Aurora Borealis. Out today, the double LP features 26 tracks of early Cloud Cult. Read More »Cloud Cult Drops A 2xLP Reissue Today: Stream Select Songs Here!

Hush Arbors: Coming Home [Video]

hush_arbors

Dueling photography is what you get with Hush Arbors‘ video for “Coming Home” off their recent Ecstatic Peace LP, Yankee Reality. First there’s the beautiful landscapes of mountains and hills and lakes from across the country (and possibly world). Then, the second photographic element is stop motion photography of the band fooling around in front of the screen on which the landscapes appear. It’s interesting, colorful, fun, and fits well with the song. Read More »Hush Arbors: Coming Home [Video]

Jets Overhead

Jets Overhead: No Nations [Album Review]

Jets Overhead could have easily been around 15 years ago. They would have made a few slacker movie soundtracks alongside the likes of The Jesus and Mary Chain (who, if you remember, were on EVERY soundtrack back then). But, there is also the likelihood they would have faded into nostalgic memory and became a simple novelty for FM radio. Thankfully, their old school and easy paced alternative album No Nations is only now shedding light. Original Soul Asylum fans are now in their forties. Scary, sure – but, this band will make them feel young again.
