Poland: Your Sunday Book [Video]

poland band

Seattle indie pop gurus Poland are back with a new album on Series II Records called Please Interstellar Policeman. Like locals Math & Physics Club, the band writes twee-like pop songs fit for swanky lounges and your old-time elevator. It is along these lines (and from this album) that we receive “Your Sunday Book”, a catchy pop song and a colorful video. Paper airplanes and simple but artsy city backdrops on paper and computer art, this multi-media video fits well with the music of Poland. Read More »Poland: Your Sunday Book [Video]

The Honest Mistakes: Break Up [Album Review]

the-honest-mistakes

The Honest Mistakes have spent the last decade desperately trying to reach the high they have now been introduced upon. Break Up is the result of a name change (formerly The Chris & Joylene Show, named after the group’s founders), a two year hiatus, three years of recording, and an all-out inspirational attitude that would not allow them to simply lay back and quit. After years of riding the coat tails of completion for so long, the final product is very impressive. Read More »The Honest Mistakes: Break Up [Album Review]

Glass Rock: Viva Radio’s Me+You Pt. 68

glass-rock

The latest artist to enter Viva Radio’s Me+You studio is Glass Rock and, as usual, we’ve got a sneak peek for you of their session. Their aptly titled debut, Tall Firs Meet Soft Location, defines the band’s make-up. Tall Firs coaxed Kathy Leisen, as the band puts it on MySpace, “out of retirement” to collaborate and create the band Glass Rock. And like those by Tall Firs, this album finds a home on Ecstatic Peace. Read More »Glass Rock: Viva Radio’s Me+You Pt. 68

Beach House

Beach House: Teen Dream [Album Review]

Fact: I never really dug Beach House. I often found their blend of minimal drone meets spacey bedroom pop a bit drab. Melodies didn’t seem to be all there, and the vocal parts, too, were dull. My interest waned in the first few songs of both their self-titled debut and their follow-up Devotion, so I’d pull them from the record player. Thus they found an inevitable fixed spot on my dusty record shelf.

FensePost Top 50: The Best Albums of 2009

2009 is a tough year to judge. I’ve checked out more albums this year than any year in the past. Well over 1,000. And there have been quite a few great ones as well. When this list began, it had 110 albums. I abandoned my top 33 and 1/3 for 45, and then said “screw it” and upped the number to an even 50. These are the top notch albums of the year, all worthy of praise.

Paper City: City Of The Future [Video]

paper_city

Super poppy lo-fi music often comes with a twee label; but even within a highly niche subgenre such as this, there are stark differences that can set one band apart from the rest of the herd. Sometimes that trait is a subtle one, just underneath the layers of standard genre-specific sensibilities. So it is with Paper City, whose Long Beach home brings forth imagery of palm trees, Mexico, and an intense longing for polka-dots and mojitos. Read More »Paper City: City Of The Future [Video]

The Inner Banks

The Inner Banks: Songs From Disko Bay [Album Review]

Partners and companions Caroline Schutz and David Gould make quite the team when they become The Inner Banks. They have made quite the mark for themselves as a duo and individually. For example, who can forget Caroline’s haunting expose’ of folk as front woman for the critically acclaimed Folk Songs For The Afterlife!? And there is David’s finger-tip-blistering banjo playing for The Bootleg Remedy. But, it’s their sense of togetherness that makes Songs From Disko Bay so enjoyable.

The Best EPs of 2009

FensePost Top 20: Best EPs of 2009

Not surprisingly, this list is filled with EPs by quite a few bands you know and quite a few you probably don’t. Of the ones you don’t know, many are likely from Washington; a quick count leaves me with five bands, or 1/4 of this list. Many of these bands I consider among the most promising artists to surface in 2009. All are worth checking out, and you’ll want to keep an eye on them as we head into 2010.

Retribution Gospel Choir: Hide It Away [mp3]

retribution_gospel_choir

Duluth Minnesota’s Retribution Gospel Choir is about as real as it gets in the world of pop-rock. They have enough energy and vibrancy to power Vegas for at least a few minutes. RGC has been riding off the success of their self-titled debut album recently (touring with Wilco, Meat Puppets, & more), but as always, their progression is never ending. Their sophomore release, 2, will be out January 26th on Sub Pop, and it features the stunning single “Hide It Away”. This track is damn solid. It’s an echoing indie rock love affair with the mistresses of 70’s rock. It has that sort of power that can have you throwing two fists is the air, closing your eyes, and drinking-in 3 minutes of bona fide musical bliss.
