When I compile best of albums of the year each December, I have a few rules for myself. One such rule is that I must have the album in my collection. This is a relatively new thing, post-pandemic. Either way, it’s inevitable: each January, I tend to finally get an album that I hadn’t picked up that should have made the list. Case in point, the third Alvvays album, Blue Rev, which just arrived half way through January.

Japandroids played the last show of their U.S. tour at Chop Suey last Tuesday evening to an enthusiastic crowd. Before starting the set, guitarist Brian King asked the audience to â€œcome down here and get wild.â€ If the crowd was a little hesitant at first, King and drummer David Prowse more than made up for it with â€œThe Boys are Leaving Townâ€, complete with head-banging and a wind machine that made King look as if he was in the midst of a photo shoot.
