Headlights: Get Going [Track Review]

Headlights

While nothing new, it’s still a bit odd to hear a Headlights song without Erin Fein at the vocal helm, as found on the group’s new single “Get Going”. Even as early as The Enemies EP from 2005, the group dabbled in giving Fein’s male counterpart, Tristan Wraight, a vocal lead. But her dominating vocal presence on some of the greatest tunes from their two LPs, Kill Them With Kindness and last year’s Some Racing, Some Stopping all but removed the memory that others occasionally snagged that role. El Perro Del Mar: Change Of Heart [Track Review]

El Perro Del Mar

Sarah Assbring’s albums under the guise El Perro Del Mar have always been pretty great, from the repetitive one-word-titled tracks off her self-titled LP to the slightly more orchestrated ones off From The Valley To The Stars. But, they often seemed almost too minimal. Well El Perro Del Mar is back with a new LP, Love Is Not Pop, and the first single off it is “Change Of Heart”, a song that defies Assbring’s minimal days and orchestrated days combined for something a bit more electric. Venice Is Sinking: Okay [Video]

Venice Is Sinking

“Okay” by Venice Is Sinking is easily one of my favorite tracks of 2009 and the album on which it can be found, AZAR, will be a tough contender to beat for the best album of the year. In support of their new maxi-single for “Okay”, they’ve now given us a most excellent video to accompany its promotion. The video itself is a joyous montage dubbed “How to Achieve Musical Greatness.” It’s a testament to how great this band truly is; “Okay” as a song is absolutely brilliant, but combined with the video… well, I just can’t think of many things that can top this. Stereo Alligator: Blow Away [Video Review]

Stereo Alligator

Animated music videos are absolutely nothing new, but Stereo Alligator give their sketchbook vibes a 3D twist in “Blow Away”. They give it a unique sort of animation. Furthermore, there’s the whole supernatural/sci-fi element, which is rare for animated videos. The overall concept is pretty sweet, fitting Stereo Alligator’s dark electro-synth sound. And everything comes together at the end — an understanding is reached as the video concludes. Read More »Stereo Alligator: Blow Away [Video Review]

Eva & The Heartmaker: Let’s Keep This Up Forever [Album Review]

Eva & The Heartmaker

There’s a classic backing to the music Eva & The Heartmaker create; part soul, part pop, and, yeah, toss in a bit of rock as well. If you’re looking for something groundbreaking, Let’s Keep This Up Forever is not likely to satisfy your taste buds, but if you dig that classic mainstream pop sound circa the late 60s and early 70s, you’ll be right at home with Eva. All Leather: I Don’t Hate… [Video Review]

All Leather

Don’t get offended; I know you want to. Honestly, I had my own reservations even posting this. It’s not necessarily due to the content of the video, rather the name of the song. It’s offensive. But you just have to get past it, past its un-politically-correctness. Because, when it comes down to it, “I Don’t Hate…” by All Leather is about (in my opinion) the stereotypical hate select religious fundamentalists put on people different from their devout. Black Feather: Silhouette [Album Review]

Black Feather

Consider expectations defied. Black Feather seemed like such a folk-worthy name; to a somewhat minor extent, Black Feather fulfills folk sensibilities, but the emphasis is minor. The same can be said for pop, though to an even lesser extent. Where this band comes full circle, however is in combining these two genres with experimentation. There’s a weighty portion of eclecticism here that simply cannot be denied. Read More »Black Feather: Silhouette [Album Review]

Afternoon Naps: Parade [Album Review]

Afternoon Naps

This may come as a surprise: Ohio is a hot spot for up-and-coming indie pop artists. There’s Pomegranates out of Cincinnati and Bears in Cleveland. Rounding out the power trio is Cleveland’s Afternoon Naps. Catchy melodies and memorable vocal hooks can be found throughout their sophomore release, Parades. But there’s much more behind the music of Afternoon Naps that makes them one of the most promising pop bands around. Read More »Afternoon Naps: Parade [Album Review]

Tigercity: Fake Gold [Track Review]

Tigercity

Vintage synths conjure thoughts of wild hype bands and pop creativity. Tigercity utilizes such instruments but they defy expectations in songs like “Fake Gold”, which drops in a laid-back tempo despite a sound and lyric that could easily warrant the contrary. But don’t get me wrong, laid back tunes can certainly be worthy; in that, “Fake Gold” is no exception. Seriously, with lyrics like Baby I just want you to know / That I’m wearing fake gold, how can you go wrong? Read More »Tigercity: Fake Gold [Track Review]
