Revisiting Transatlanticism by Death Cab for Cutie

Once again, FensePost has become dormant. I get it in my head that posts need to be long and detailed and overly complicated with wise words and complex thoughts. Thus, months go by without a post.

This has been an ongoing thing for the better part of a decade now.

So, today I’m just going to drop in something brief: a quick peek at Transatlanticism by Death Cab for Cutie.

This is the 10th Anniversary 180 gram reissue of the band’s 2003 masterpiece.

I’ve always enjoyed “Expo ’86;” the song is nostalgic for me in that my family visited Vancouver BC that year during the expo itself. I have a few memories of that time, though, being six years old, many of them are fleeting.

But these days, the songs that resonate most are the title track “Transatlanticism” and “We Looked Like Giants.”

Of course, what caused me to dig this out was the opening song “The New Year” given the closure of 2020 and beginning of 2021.

Given the fresh hell we collectively experienced in 2020, many view the new year as a changing of the tide. Ben Gibbard sums up what we woke up to yesterday morning in the first two lines:

So this is the new year
And I don’t feel any different

Surprise! Not much has changed. But there is hope.

Here’s the video for the song, and here’s to a better year.
