Finally Back: Melody’s Echo Chamber Gives us “Cross My Heart”

Melody's Echo Chamber

I’ve had my eye on Melody Prochet of Melody’s Echo Chamber since the release of her self-titled debut LP way back in 2012. The stunning hazy psychedelic-drenched pop blew me away with singles like “Crystalized” and “Some Time Alone, Alone” and of course “I Follow You”.

Well, since it’s her birthday today, she announced the follow up is finally coming. The new LP will be called Bon Voyage and from it she shared “Cross My Heart”.

“Cross My Heart” is a light departure for Prochet; she ditches many of the sensibilities Kevin Parker (Tame Impala) injected while producing her debut. So, in a sense, this is the true Melody’s Echo Chamber. It finds Prochet layering vocals, singing in both French and English, and including a somewhat weird breakdown in the middle. Still, it’s packed with a kaleidoscope of psychedelic pop sounds.

In fact, one of the first things I picked up on is that the early moments of the song (before the strange breakdown and the French vocals): she seems to draw inspiration from Margo Guryan who’s Take A Picture from 1968 remains one of my all time favorites.

“Cross My Heart” is a bit of a medley, jumping through various styles and sounds before returning home to that driving percussion and fuzzed-out guitar.

It’s hard to believe it’s been so long, but back in 2014 she released a track called “Shirim” which was supposed to be released on an LP that never quite made it to fruition. Like everything off Melody’s Echo Chamber, I quickly became obsessed with the track:

(The inclusion of “Shirim” on Bon Voyage is not yet certain, to my knowledge.)

While waiting in agony for something new, I snatched up a copy of her 7-inch for “Crystalized” with B-side “Endless Shore” to bide my time. That was a year and a half ago.

Bon Voyage will be released via Prochet’s own label, Rayon Vert. Word on the street is that it’ll happen sometime this spring.

If you’ve seen her Instagram or follow her on Twitter, that’s no surprise. She’s been teasing the announcement for the past few months. Back in early March, we heard a snippet of “Cross My Heart” on an Instagram video in which Prochet wrote:

Cross my heart and hope to die

And before that, she teased the album art back in February.

Both posts have since been archived or deleted. But as a longtime fan, I’m just excited to have something new by her to play next to my longtime favorites.
