Jackson Scott: Great Lo Fi Weirdness

Jackson Scott

Jackson Scott

Listen to “Sandy” and you’ll get a slight glimpse of what Jackson Scott has to offer. Melbourne, Scott’s new album, highlights the song amidst eleven others. Memorable melodies keep the vocal hooks plenty, while the instrumentation maintains a generous level of acoustic lo-fi greatness.

“Sandy” is a song both endearing and eerie, blending that acoustic lo-fi pop with a sound more apt to draw references of experimentation and hazy psych-pop.

Listen to the song’s successor, “That Awful Sound”: 90s-influenced slacker pop in the vein of early Beck, Built To Spill circa The Normal Years or even more modern artists like Scott & Charlene’s Wedding.

These are the sounds you’ll hear throughout Melbourne. Songs that have happy melodies (“In the Sun”), others soaked in a dreamy haze (“Together Forever”), each juxtaposed against that which came before and that which comes after. Melbourne is filled with greatness — weird, but great.

Jackson Scott’s Melbourne is out July 23 on Fat Possum . Check it out below and let me know what you think.
