Maston Band

Maston Band

You may not know the name Tyler T. Williams, but I do. This is the same TTW that directed the stunning, emotional video for “Montana” by Youth Lagoon, as well as that band’s breathtaking night of horror for “July”. It’s the same Tyler Williams that has done similarly impressive videos for Pandit, Coma Cinema, Entrepreneurs and Craft Spells. Not to mention Finn Riggins. He now turns his sights on Trouble in Mind psychedelic artist Maston.

The best ones, no surprise, are the ones that tell a story. Some have intriguing twists like “Blue Suicide” by Coma Cinema. Others are heartbreaking like “Montana”. And some are just simply cool like Craft Spells’ “After The Moment”.

“Messages” by Maston is more mysterious than anything. Amidst a gray desolate, wintery land, a lone figure stumbles stark and yellow toward something. I won’t give away any spoilers, but it’s oddly the perfect accompaniment to Maston’s jangly psych-pop sound. As one commenter puts it, the video is “cold and lonely.” He’s right; it has a mighty chill to it that contrasts nicely with the distantly warm “Messages” yet is equally as haunting.

This is precisely what makes Williams one of my favorite music video directors around today.

Maston’s new LP Shadows is out now on Trouble In Mind Records.
