My latest obsession is a little band from Ypsilanti, Michigan called Lightning Love. After releasing a debut LP called November Birthday in 2008 and following it with their Girls Who Look Like Me EP from earlier this year, the band is set to give us their official sophomore full-length, Blonde Album.
“I Know” is the first track to be singled out, and it features playful yet often thought-provoking indie pop. Often classified as minimal, and rightfully so, Lightning Love does give that descriptor a nod here, though elsewhere on Blonde Album sees the band diverting from minimal indie pop for a slightly fuller sound (albeit not too much).
It’s fun and bouncy pop conjoined with introspective lyrics. Leah Diehl takes the lead on vocals, lending to each song a sound that is wholeheartedly confident, despite lyrics that present her as shy, self-conscious and somewhat anxious.
Somewhat likened to other modern bands like Hospitality, Lightning Love is sure to gain some hype this year as they set forth to release Blonde Album. “I Know” is just a glimpse of the greatness you’ll find on the new record.
Keep an eye out for this band and this album, out late August via Quite Scientific Records. Above photo by Chip Adams.
