Guantanamo Baywatch: Surf Rock, Elvis, and Raunchy Punk

Guantanamo Baywatch

Oh shit. Punk rock meets 60s surf rock and is then compressed into lo-fi obscurity. That’s what you get with Guantanamo Baywatch. No joke. Their new album, Chest Crawl, pairs more accessible instrumental tracks like “Barbacoa” and “Massage My Taj Mahal” (I nominate for best song title of the year) with those containing vocals.

And the vocals you get…? Well, think Elvis had he grown up in the 60s and 70s, drank a bit too much, smoked a bit too much, enjoyed trashy sex and had a predilection toward drowning his vocals in a thick haze of reverb. You get this full effect in tracks like “Boomerenga”, “Sad Over You” and “We Came With Dottie”.

Guantanamo Baywatch creates a combination of surf rock, Elvis-ish vocals, and raunchy raucous punk that is entirely refreshing. Chest Crawl drops tomorrow via Dirtnap Records.
