Kuan [Feature]

kuan

Apparently, Dayton Ohio band Kuan prefers not to name their song. Rather than taking the standard and equivocally boring route and giving them the “Untitled #…” title, they prefer the alphabet. This contradicts heavily with their kin in the instrumental, post-rock-y world, who more often than not concoct wild ongoing titles like “With Tired Eyes, Tired Minds, Tired Souls, We Slept” (Explosions In The Sky) or “Isolated By The Secrets Of Your Fellow Men” (Saxon Shore). Those otherwise brooding titles provide the listener with an expectation which is, for the most part, fulfilled.

Here, though, there is none of that, just curiosity. And that means the question remains: thumbs up or thumbs down? Like those aforementioned bands, Kuan is instrumental. It fits comfortably in the post rock realm, but adds in a 90s flare and a hint of math. In other words, it rocks… heavily, loudly, and with no boundaries. Yes, Kuan is a band you listen to with the volume up high, headphones on tight, and eyes lightly closed.

Sure, it’s a bit rough around the edges, but there’s something to say about a band that the insense energy of Kuan yet possesses the ability to wash away all worries and stress that come with day-to-day life, all without a single spoken word. They do it on their LPs ON and Standby, and they do it well. This band has that something, whatever it is, and it’s damn good.
