Countless are the artists that dabble in classical, but it is virtually a given that included will be an added genre or two. Rare is the modern composer that edges above and makes classical music cool, yet Ólafur Arnalds does so with grace and simplicity. Arnalds’ latest were simultaneously written one per day, recorded, and released as aptly titled Found Songs.
Arnalds is in many ways like contemporaries Kaada and Greenwood. His style classical music errs on austerity, yet has melodies complex and often paring strife and anxiety with a calming and soothing nature. The latter is much more present on Found Songs, whereas the former found a welcome home on his previous release, the astounding Eulogy For Evolution.
Found Songs is a viable accomplishment given the time-frame of which each song was written. This condensed period of time, spanning a mere week, has in fact created an anomaly: in Found Songs, Arnalds has effortlessly and skillfully produced a timeless work of art.
Found Songs can be downloaded in its entirety from Erased Tapes.
