Burn To Shine 5: Seattle, WA [Film Review]

Tiny Vipers from Burn To Shine 5

Burn To Shine has an interesting manifesto. The people who put these films together gather local bands for one day of recording in a building that is going to be destroyed. For Seattle, recorded January 27, 2007, they chose an ancient house and fourteen of Seattle’s greatest bands, including power names like Ben Gibbard, Eddie Vedder and Minus The Bear.

The disc opens with Spook The Horse’s “Another New Year” before jumping into a ballad called “Little Round Mirrors” by Harvey Danger. Also making appearances are sad slow-core artist Tiny Vipers, hip hoppers Blue Scholars, Barsuk’s Dave Bazan and The Long Winters, and Matador’s The Cave Singers. Each dishes out a unique “music video”, giving the viewer an in-depth look into the artists’ minds.

Collections like Burn To Shine are great for music fans; they show favorite artists performing excellent tunes in a unique spot. And as music fans tend to seek out exclusives, many of these takes include some little additives, like “Little Round Mirrors” by Harvey Danger and “Departure” by The Long Winters. (The latter includes an outstanding guitar solo by John Roderick.)

And, of course, this DVD wouldn’t be complete without the grand finale–the destruction of the house. However, in this case, the house is not destroyed; it is simply carried away on a truck.

I wonder where the house is now. Did it find a new home, so to speak? Has it been remodeled? Is there a new family inside? These are all things outside the realm of the DVD that I doubt will ever become public knowledge.

For now, I’ll sit back and enjoy a little more of The Cave Singers doing what they do best.

Below is “On This Side” by Tiny Vipers. It’s off Jesy Fortino’s 2007 Sub Pop debut, Hands Across The Void.
