Grand Archives: Miniature Birds [Video]

Grand Archives by David Belisle

A comfort band is one that you can return to at any time and any place and still enjoy; the true comfort band typically falls into a categorization that includes some all-time favorite albums and groups that make top personal end of year charts. Their songs have that certain something—a connection—that is, if nothing else, comforting. Grand Archives (MySpace) is such a band for me.

Here in Seattle we have somewhat of a local celebrity in one John Richards. Richards is, in my opinion, the most cherished DJ at KEXP. He now splits his time between Seattle and New York, where the station launched a local program earlier this year with Radio New York. Richards also hosts a Seattle music show on the Seattle Channel.

And that’s where I first saw the video for “Miniature Birds”. The video is a good-natured piece featuring a lovable kid playing the role of lead band member. The roles are flipped and the kid is hitch hiking when Grand Archives just happens by in their van; yeah, they give him a lift. Boasting four part harmonies and pleasant pop sensibilities, Grand Archives are easily one of the best pop/rock bands to see live these days.

Grand Archives came onto the scene last year after Mat Brooke left Band Of Horses to focus on his new project (this band) and his Seattle bar. With a four song, self-released EP that was quickly picked up by Sub Pop in the fall, their self-titled debut was subsequently released in February of this year.
