OK, so I don’t really like to post about the same band in such a short period of time — last week I wrote a track review on The Octopus Project’s “Wet Gold” — but this video is too good to pass up. “Wet Gold” on screen is courtesy Zellner Bros. and it features green monsters (similar to those that appear live on stage with the band), colorful shell crabs and beautiful crashing waves.

If you recall, “Wet Gold” is a rarity for The Octopus Project in that it features vocals from a band that never has vocals. And the result is a literally breathtaking foray into dreamy melodies and harmonics. This sound is the brainchild of the psychedelic and the electronic, and the video reflects just that with a storyline fit for either REM sleep or a pleasant hallucinatory trip.

The Octopus project hits Seattle on Tuesday, August 18 at Chop Suey. Below the video embed, I’ve included a string of all their live dates west of Texas. “Wet Gold” in both audio and video formats can be found on The Octopus Project’s Golden Beds EP, out now on Peek-A-Boo Records.

So I really dig this; when I saw The Octopus Project perform at SXSW in 2007, there were no vocals, and while the music was entirely mesmerizing and the performance was completely amazing, this is a welcome change from that era of the band. Instrumentally, little has changed. It’s still filled with phenomenal harmonies that sift through multiple keyboards, loops, and upbeat percussion — and… can it be… is that a theremin there toward the end? Yes!

Instrumentally, little has changed. It’s still filled with phenomenal harmonies that sift through multiple keyboards, loops, and upbeat percussion — and… can it be… is that a theremin there toward the end? Yes!

But what truly makes this song stand out, as you can probably imagine, is the excellent vocal harmonies that absolutely compliment the instrumentation. Combined, there is no other word for this song than EPIC.

“Wet Gold” is off The Octopus Project’s Golden Beds EP, out next week on Peek-A-Boo Records. The EP features five audio tracks and seven videos. You can also catch The Octopus Project on tour here in the West next month.
