I wasn’t originally planning on doing a show this evening, but decided to take my normal spot behind the microphone anyway. So the playlist didn’t begin coming together until the evening of. There was no theme, it was all variety; folk to electronic to noise rock.

I entered the studio at about 9:35pm, meeting up with Stuarto, who has the time slot before mine. A quick interview about 15 minutes before my show, another few songs, and I was up. It was requested that I attempt a transition, and as indie music is my theme, and world music is his, I figured I’d kick things off with an oldie, but goodie: “The Gulag Orkestar” by Beirut.

The theme of the evening, loosely, centered around folk. Indie folk, folk pop, folk rock, orchestral folk, experimental folk… you name it. Below is the playlist from the night. I was pretty obsessed with O’Death‘s video for “Low Tide” from a few years back. The band has returned with a new album, and from it comes “Bugs”. The video for “Bugs” isn’t quite as creepy as that earlier video. Similarly, the song is a bit more lighthearted. Vocals are more restrained, but O’Death continues that wonderfully incessant percussive pace with emphasis on tambourine and banjo. “Bugs” is less erratic, but just as good as “Low Tide”.

O’Death’s new album is called Outside and it is out now on Ernest Jenning Record Co.

There’s something totally creepy about this video. Maybe it’s the epileptic intro, sure to send you into a seizure. Or maybe it’s the way the band seems to have been thrust into the 21st century from the mid 1800s pioneer days. Or maybe it’s the fact that they coddle skeletons and what appear to be quite realistic decaying corpses. Yeah, I think it’s probably that one.

O’Death (MySpace), as a band, is about as amazing as they come. Their sound, while hinting of centuries-old, powerful barroom folk is filled with wailing fiddles and wild percussion and rabid vocals. “Lowtide” is an easy crowd favorite. Had I seen this video last year, it would definitely have made my Best Videos of 2008…
