It seemed wrong to do anything outside a tribute to the late Jason Molina. Since learning of his passing the other weekend, Songs: Ohia and Magnolia Electric Co. have been dominating my playlists; in particular the former. Given this fact, I focused on the sub-genres Molina often found himself in – folk, folk-rock, and alt-country. Artists like Bill Callahan, Norfolk & Western, Brown Bird and Hayden all made the cut. I spent quite a bit of time during my February 22 show chatting with Ozarks’ Robbie Augspurger about various items, from music publicity to awesome cars from the 70s and 80s. Turns out he’s quite the photographer as well. Beyond that, not much to say about this playlist. Another eclectic mix of tunes for a Friday night.

A Retrospective Top 20: Best Albums Of 2003

The summer of 2003 was a hot one in eastern Washington, and my concrete bunker of an apartment contained the heat like no other. Granted, the image below wasn’t shot by yours truly until 2004, but it sure seemed hot enough to ignite even the least combustible of items. I wrapped up my undergraduate that December, which was cold as Antarctica, and upon that milestone I moved to Seattle. It was a good year for the Northwest; many of my favorite albums came from Seattle labels like Sub Pop and Barsuk. As for the list, I’ve expanded it to 20. Couldn’t help it.

Sad news was released last Friday, as the independent music world lost an amazing talent, and the world lost an amazing individual. Jeff Hanson was found dead in his new apartment; preliminary reports are calling it an accidental fall. I met Jeff a few years back when he performed at a small art gallery in Moscow, ID. Overall, Hanson departs from folk and dives headlong into pop.
