Tennis may have given us “Take Me Somewhere” last fall, but they’re just now putting out a video for the song. Filmed by Ian Perlman, the video takes place aboard a sailboat and it all took place Chesapeake Bay in VA. The music fits the video well; as well it would as the husband and wife duo behind Tennis lived on one for some time. “Take Me Somewhere” is a light indie pop tune in the vein of the 1960s. The song can be found on Tennis’ debut LP, Cape Dory, out now on Fat Possum.

The fuzz trend has, in my opinion, two poles. One finds artists dishing out coherent lyrics backed by lightly distorted guitars like this year’s The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart. In other words, it’s pure pop. Others, like Wavves, produce mostly indiscernible lyrics and chord progressions. This style is more fitting for the rock/punk classification

“No Hope Kids” is, per the prior statement, packed with distortion; from the cranked-up guitars to the shouted vocals, everything is mixed to be appropriately loud. The Pete Ochs directed video follows suit, going from dark live performances to the color-filled wanderings of the band.

While one may consider the incoherency aspect a negative, Wavves prove with songs like “No Hope Kids” that the assumption is false. There’s plenty of infectious hooks here, despite the mass of noise. “No Hope Kids” is off Wavves’ sophomore release, Wavvves, out now on Fat Possum Records.
