Fense’s Radio Show: October 7, 2011

I entered the studio at about 9:35pm, meeting up with Stuarto, who has the time slot before mine. A quick interview about 15 minutes before my show, another few songs, and I was up. It was requested that I attempt a transition, and as indie music is my theme, and world music is his, I figured I’d kick things off with an oldie, but goodie: “The Gulag Orkestar” by Beirut. Blitzen Trapper: American Goldwing (Album Review)

Blitzen Trapper

There are very few certainties in life. With the economy in a downfall, natural disasters coming from all angles, and the earth slowly warming, it is very easy to become weary about any sort of regularity in this world. But, there is are two certainties you can always count on: 1) you are going to get older and 2) Blitzen Trapper is going to release an album that just gets better and better. Both of these have inevitably happened this year. And however you feel about Number 1, you should be very excited about Number 2. Eric Earley and Company have brought us their 4th album, American Goldwing, just in time for us to remember what is actually cool about living in America. Blitzen Trapper: Love The Way You Walk Away (Video)

Blitzen Trapper 8 (2011)

Blitzen Trapper are arguably one of the hardest working (and most estranged in character) bands out today. With a relentless tour schedule that makes you wonder if Eric Earley and crew actually have homes to go back to, and what seems to be an “album a year” strategy going for them, they have definitely earned this title. But, the best is yet to come. Everyone’s favorite indie-folk group is due to release their fourth album, third from Sub Pop Records, very soon! And if “Love The Way You Walk Away” and it’s corresponding video are as impeccably brilliant and personable as the rest of the album, we are shaping up to hear what will be the definitive Blitzen Trapper album. These suave folk-smith warriors always seem to outshine themselves year in and year out. Read More »Blitzen Trapper: Love The Way You Walk Away (Video)

Blitzen Trapper: Destroyer Of The Void [Album Review]

Blitzen Trapper

Over the last decade, there has been a strange emergence in the indie rock world that has made people feel downright silly for only tuning in now. It has also built an even stranger devotion that can only be described as fanatical and a bit obsessive. Oh Ye, Blitzen Trapper, you are back! When Sub Pop picked these guys up to release their, what is now an indie classic, fourth album Furr, something magical happened for fans of true American folk and experimental rock. And it has happened again. BT’s fifth release, Destroyer Of The Void, brings us back onto the padded wagon traveling westward bound at a slow trot through the heart, body, and soul. 10 (ish) Reasons Why Sub Pop May Dominate 2010 [Label Spotlight In A List]

Earlier this week I noted in my review of Avi Buffalo that Sub Pop may very well dominate my end of year list, and that being notable as we near the 1/3 mark of 2010. After thinking about it, I figured it was time for another list in Label Spotlight form. Now, the typical Label Spotlight covers the unknown record collectives throughout the world, but as some of my favorite releases so far this year have come from Sub Pop, I figured What the hell… Let’s go for it!

Blitzen Trapper: Black River Killer [Video Review]

Blitzen Trapper

Timelessness is a virtue seldom known in our dying times. But, with an artist like Blitzen Trapper trail blazing along the modified Americas, faith in the old fashioned may be reinstated. Between a storytelling folk tale suitable for every decade a man has lived, and a truly epic and well orchestrated free flowing music video with the caring spirit of a 90’s alternative band, it couldn’t get much better than this. But, what else would you expect a song that made The Notorious B.I.G. a folk star on YouTube? Read More »Blitzen Trapper: Black River Killer [Video Review]

Blitzen Trapper: Furr [Album Review]

Blitzen Trapper by Jade Harris

Blitzen Trapper (MySpace) has been on my radar for some time now, but I just haven’t been paying them the attention they deserve. Chalk it up to their country swagger—something I’m generally not fond of—or the sheer amount of music out there at this time (I am fairly limited by the number of hours in a day). Luckily, their latest release, Furr, just arrived in my mailbox. Read More »Blitzen Trapper: Furr [Album Review]
