After a week away, it was nice to be back in the studio. This week I played several folk-related tunes, a few garage-based ones, and a small handful of indie pop tracks. With the amount of indie-folk I’ve played of late, I’m thinking we’re in store for another dreamy mix and maybe even a garage rock mix in the near future.

Andi and I have been on a DIY kick of late and a recent project has been homemade laundry detergent. With the three ingredients displayed in the photo above, along with water, we won’t have to purchase detergent for a few years. How’s that for cost cutting, hipsters?

I’ve highlighted a few tracks below (i.e. the bold ones) for sampling purposes. Download and enjoy!

It finally happened. Winter arrived. Snow fell and we woke up this past Sunday with about three inches of the stuff. I’m glad it didn’t arrive earlier, as Friday saw me at KSVR for a four hour stint of music.
The first two hours flirted with folk music and the latter half was full-on garage rock, garage pop and psychedelic pop. Much of the 10 to midnight show came courtesy Finest Kiss, who posted some great 2011 lists.

Bears are a delectable pop band out of Cleveland, Ohio that blend indie pop sounds with psychedelic instrumentation and the clash between sleepy and mopey vocals.
Bears are a delectable pop band out of Cleveland, Ohio that blend indie pop sounds with psychedelic instrumentation and the clash between sleepy and mopey vocals. If there’s anything I like, it’s rainy-day pop music, and that’s precisely what this is. Greater Lakes is the band’s new LP — their third at that — and it comes out on Misra Records on Valentine’s Day 2012.

Word is floating around that this is their best album yet, and with a few listens, it’s easy to hear the truth in that statement. It opens strong with “Eleven a.m.” and “You’re Going” and continues to what, in my opinion, is the album’s showstopper: “Don’t Wait”. That song, hovering around the midpoint, is among their most psychedelic influenced tracks yet. And the greatness continues through the end of Greater Lakes.

Longtime fans of Bears will rejoice in this new album, and new fans will likely rush to pick up their previous catalog. Albums like their self-titled and singles like the masterful Who Knows b/w Making Something are all worthy of any pop fan’s collection, but they stand in this album’s shadow; Greater Lakes is an instant classic.

Download: “Eleven a.m.” by Bears

This show began like any other, but without the transition difficulties. All was smooth. The music, on the other hand, was not. After a long, satisfying week, I was in need of some loud, abrasive rock music. But it wasn’t all like that. Due to the cold weather, I mixed in some beach pop, fuzzy dream pop and good old garage rock and pop.

I love surprises, and The Super Vacations was just that. I returned home one day to find a lovely little 7-inch in my mailbox. The split single/EP featured two songs each by two bands. The first, I recognized: the amazing duo Eternal Summers. The second, a newbie, was The Super Vacations. “Beer League” is one of their two stellar tracks on this single.

Listen: “Beer League” by The Super Vacations

For some reason, “Brat Mouth” was the song that stuck out to me on Hunters’ new EP, Hands On Fire. This is a little strange, as listening to the entire 5-song EP, they’re all pretty damn solid. This EP is the latest offering from Aagoo Records.

“I’m A Snowman” follows the path Bears has taken over the past year or so; their sound is maturing and they’re honing in on the greatness they build with albums like Bears and singles like Who Knows. As found on these releases, “I’m A Snowman” is built upon a foundation of folky, psychedelic indie-pop. All of it is super catchy.

On Christmas day, Bears are releasing their new 7″, Snowman, packed with four Christmas tunes and a download card. The release is a limited pressing of 250 on red wax, and the download comes with an extra two bonus Christmas tunes the band recorded. If there’s one indie Christmas album you pick up this year, make it Snowman by Bears! Pre-order it now in the Bears online store.

It’s been ages since I’ve written about Bears, Ohio’s best pop band. And I was totally stoked to get a few copies of their new single in the mail (ordered a few months ago when it was still at the plant). Who Knows includes two brief songs, the title track and “Make Something.”

It’s been ages since I’ve written about Bears, Ohio’s best pop band. And I was totally stoked to get a few copies of their new single in the mail (ordered a few months ago when it was still at the plant). Who Knows includes two brief songs, the title track and “Make Something.”

While I have yet to pick up the group’s EP, Shortest Day Of The Year, and really only have their self-titled debut LP to mark as a reference point, Bears’ music hasn’t really changed all too much since that 2006 release. This is, of course, wonderful news.

“Who Knows” may be slightly catchier than several tunes off Bears and the production value includes a slightly higher quality level (or maybe it’s simply the vinyl format shining through). But all those things that drew me to Bears in the early days of FensePost remain: lightly harmonic fuzzy vocals, heavy emphasis on keys, lovable hand-claps.

If you’ve enjoyed anything by Bears in the past, there’s no question about whether or not you’ll dig this.

How many bands these days have a xylophone? Very few. It’s just one of the many things that make Bears (MySpace) special. On their self-titled debut, the Cleveland, Ohio pop group mixes its pop sensibilities with light psychedelia on par with early Of Montreal and Elephant 6 style-recordings.
Lumped into that somewhat classic era in more modern pop music would make it seem like Bears have a lot to live up to, but with such a strong debut, the group appears to have already succeeded.

While the similarities to Elephant 6 and Of Montreal are readily apparent, ties to 60s and 70s pop are not nearly as straightforward. For example, “How To Live” has hints of the instrumentation backing The Byrds and The Zombies. Despite these ties, Bears’ music is quite unique. Their mix of xylophone with reverberated jangle-y guitars and cymbal heavy percussion, and soft, almost undetectable keys give it the psychedelic wave. This is extremely apparent in “Still Alright” and “Everywhere”.

Another unique factor about Bears is their ability to not only mesh pop with psychedelia, but also add a country swagger as they do in “Walk Away” and “Days”. Leading into “Walk Away” is “Never Have To Guess”, a track that hails Bears as a strong and relevant force in the world of indie-pop. Closing the album in a most fitting way, “Stay” combines all the aspects of pop and psychedelic daze and even a light country shuffle, leaving the listener in awe and with the desire to continually return for more.
