Jacco Gardner Visits the Northwest is Support of “Cabinet of Curiosities”

Jacco Gardner

Channeling a mid- to late-era rendition of The Beatles, at least in the closing track (“The Ballad of Little Jane”) off his recent LP Cabinet of Curiosities, Jacco Gardner‘s music has most frequently been alluded to as a modern rendition of 1960s psychedelia. I’d agree; it’s what drew me to “The Ballad of Little Jane” back in February. Next month, Gardner will grace the West Coast, hitting all the normal hotspots.

Late last month I finally got my hands on Cabinet of Curiosities. As a whole, the album stands up nicely, maintaining a staid consistency throughout. Beyond my early mention of The Beatles, there’s an interesting clash of Syd Barret and The Zombies influence.

Gardner’s music is adorned with classical and baroque instrumentation, from an array of strings to woodwinds (including flute), mellotrons, and harpsichords. Far from minimal, songs like “The One Eyed King”, “Watching the Moon” and “Help Me Out” possess a depth not often heard in psychedelic pop. I’d love to hear how this plays out in a live setting.

Cabinet of Curiosities is out now on Trouble in Mind Records. Check out Jacco Gardner’s Northwest tour dates below then jump down to listen to the album’s opening and closing tracks “Clear the Air” and “The Ballad of Little Jane” respectively.
