Coming Soon: The Anacortes Unknown Music Series #2

The Unknown in Anacortes

The Unknown in Anacortes

I must admit, I was quite sad to hear that What The Heck Fest, an über indie music festival in Anacortes, WA, was coming to an end after ten years. While I had only attended a few, I caught a many great acts at the event, including The Hive Dwellers and Stephen Steinbrink. Good news: The Anacortes Unknown Music Series is gearing up to take its place.

Curated in part or whole by Geneviève Castrée, there’s rumor that the event is to be a quarterly series with at least two taking place in 2013. The first goes down March 23 and, in true underground Anacortes music festival style, dinner will be served. Denise Crowe will be providing the eats.

Here’s the current list of performers:
Broken Water
Lori Goldston
Lois
Ô Paon
Allyson Foster
Lloyd & Michael
Jae Choi
DJ Weird Cactus
Marianna Ritchey (doing a presentation on Hildegard von Bingen)

Now for a sneak peek of five of the artists that will be performing on March 23.

Broken Water

Broken Water
Olympia’s Broken Water joined the Hardly Art family in 2012 and released their album Tempest in May of that year. The three-piece has an enormous sound somewhere between rock and drone that encapsulates insatiable, wild experimentation. Being a huge Hardly Art fan, Broken Water may be one of my more anticipated performances of the event. Listen to / download “Underground” by Broken Water off last year’s Tempest below:

Lori Goldston

Lori Goldston
Lori Goldston is a solo cellist who can also be found in the band Earth. Her solo set, as you can hear below, may be one continuous experimental electric cello song, melodic and droning. Below you can hear Lori play a solo set in Eureka, CA from way back in 2010.

Ô Paon

O Paon
Ô Paon‘s music is haunting, French and borders on minimal. I am in love with this sound. This is Geneviève Castrée, noted above as the curator of The Anacortes Unknown Music Series. She used to record under the name Woelv. Given the track below was recorded at the previous event, it’ll give you a good idea of what to expect.

Allyson Foster

Allyson Foster
Allyson Foster is one-half the duo Hungry Cloud Darkening (the other half being Nicholas Wilbur). Listen to “Moments Inside Cloud” by Hungry Cloud Darkening below:

Lloyd & Michael

Lloyd & Michael
I knew I recognized Lloyd & Michael, the duo of Kate Davidson and M. Ritchey are founding members of Dear Nora. After parting ways for many years, the duo is back and their album Just As God Made Us is slightly reminiscent of their previous collaborative work, with great male/female harmony vocals, soft guitars and simply great melodies.
