Pure Bathing Culture: Ivory Coast (Video)

Pure Bathing Culture

I have no clue what’s going on. Seriously. A blue thing she treats like a baby. Her man has something evil hidden inside that comes out on occasion. She’s all emotional. There are hologram sharks. I’m sorry, but it’s all beyond me. Yes, I’m talking about the new video for “Ivory Coast” by Portland duo Pure Bathing Culture. It was directed by Sean Pecknold (whose brother Robin fronts Fleet Foxes, and for whom he has directed several music videos).

Pecknold has long used video as an entirely creative outlet, and where some make sense, others (such as “Ivory Coast”)… well, not so much. But that doesn’t mean they aren’t without merit. This is a highly creative video, entirely unique, and quite fun to watch. Kind of like a David Lynch film; but with noun fun involved, it’s much more lighthearted than your typical Lynch.

“Ivory Coast” is off Pure Bathing Culture’s recent self-titled EP on Father/Daughter Records. The band has seen a lot of hype this year based on that four-song EP, and it’s warranted. I’ve spun tracks on the record several times over the past few months on KSVR and KSVU.

Keep an eye out for more from Pure Bathing Culture — with just four quite great songs available, wouldn’t be surprised if they’ve got a few more lined up for the near future (at least one can hope).

Check out the video below and while you’re at it, listen to “Silver Shore’s Lake” off Pure Bathing Culture EP:
