Múm: Hvernig Á Að Særa Vini Sína (Video)

Mum

Iceland’s Múm has returned with a new album called Early Birds, out July 17 on Morr Music. In anticipation of the release, they’ve given us a video for “Hvernig Á Að Særa Vini Sína” (directed by Máni M. Sigfússon). The song, translated to English, reads “How to Hurt Your Friends.” It’s highly imaginative, a bit distractive, and somewhat disturbing. Within you’ll find two individuals, one man and one woman. He destroys things. They both randomly lose teeth. It’s weird.

In a way, “Hvernig Á Að Særa Vini Sína” is the perfect video for a band like Múm. It’s opposite what you’d expect. The band is known for highly imaginative compositions, some with words and some without. (Their new single, “0,000Orð”, for example is fully instrumental and includes an array of instruments including trumpet.) These songs are not disturbing nor are they destructive; they are mystical, hypnotic and mesmerizing.

Don’t forget to look for Early Birds on Morr next week. Actually, the album is a collection of early recordings/forgotten songs spanning the band’s early days (i.e. roughly 1998 to 2000).
