Daniel Merrill, Robin Alderton and Nathaniel Mann, the trio that make up Dead Rat Orchestra, have created a mystical album in The Guga Hunters of Ness. The album was originally crafted to be the soundtrack for a BBC documentary of the same name, and on it you can find the single “The Geshin and the Guga”.
Dead Rat Orchestra fit an interesting mold, using unconventional instruments to create an abstract folk meets post rock sound somewhere in between Mogwai and Godspeed You! Black Emperor (and maybe a hint of Thee Silver Mt. Zion and Tra La La Band as well).
“The Geshin and The Guga” is more the latter, with surreal yet entirely pleasant string melodies. The song is somewhat minimal, very soft, and lacks any sort of percussion. Instead, it envelopes the listener in the most delightful of dream-like states.
Watch for The Guga Hunters of Ness from Dead Rat Orchestra, due out on Critical Heights in July. And don’t forget to grab “The Geshin and the Guga” below.
