Bobby Joe Ebola & The Children Macnuggits Live at Backspace [04.07.12]

Bobby Joe Ebola live in Portland

In almost any other city in the world, the crowd at Backspace may have been considered….to say the least, a bit odd.  Angel headed hipsters all decked out in their finest flannel shirts and skinny jeans, and fueled by the spirit in which the Goofpunx Festival provides annually (and maybe a few cans of PBR).  But, this is Portland.  A city that has taken the right ideas of absurdity and artistic reality from the likes of Greenwich Village and/or San Francisco to a whole new bizarro type of direction.  And for fans of punk and/or enlightening freaked out music, there couldn’t be a far more perfect way to spend and evening with the legendary group we all know and love, Bobby Joe Ebola & The Children Macnuggits.

BJE made their fanatical return back in 2010 in a major way.  After a decade of absence, the dynamic duo (and now, sometimes full band) have been working diligently to spread their beloved message of “just because we’re laughing, doesn’t mean we’re joking”.  And they did a damn fine job on this beautiful spring night among a hundred plus freaks, geeks, and geniuses during the Goofpunx Festival.  It was astonishingly sweet and incredible to see so many people sing along to the glorious message they want to shout to the world with tracks from their latest album, F, like “Life Is Excellent” and “Sandwiches and Ammunition”.

The newfound maturity and free-flowing expresionalist way abouts in what the illustrious Dan and Corbett are creating now is absolutely phenomenal.  And what showmen!  They are truly entertainers in every sense of the word.  Corbett with his wacky and “totally into it” vibes, and Dan with his Dave Grohl-esque character in which he blurs the lines between seriousness and comedic relief in such a truly unique fashion.

If these straight unlaced cats don’t nab you with their beautiful and unique sense of character, their live performance will surely kick you in the brain and get your funny bone and your tendered heart spun around into a frenzied motion.

It’s a very well known fact that simply have fun, catchy, and all around great songs are not factors that will win over audiences.  Genuine showmanship and an acute sense of joy for what you do is what will win over the masses.  It doesn’t seem at all possible for an audience member to go to a Bobby Joe Ebola show and not leave in spirits far greater than they could have ever imagine.  If you are one to do this, you may have issues far greater than any therapist or Baptist preacher could ever heal.  This is about as good timin’, thought-provokin’, and boot strapped to a candy coated ass kickin’ kind of fun you could ever dream of having.

And they’re doing it all for you, folks.

They’re always touring!  So the next time they stroll through your hometown….be sure to thank them for their service.  They will surely thank you right back for yours. Stream a track from F below and enjoy the ride!
