Gabriel Miller-Phillips: One For The Crow (Album Review)

gabriel-miller-phillips

Gabriel Miller-Phillips creates pleasant pop-based folk rock on his new album, One For The Crow. On one end is full and vibrant sound based on steady pop hooks, while the other is softer and more subdued.

Per the latter, Miller-Phillips has fully mastered the ability to craft powerful folk ballads; chalk it up part to working on the album in isolation and part to working with Alex Lipsen (Phosphorescent) to record the album.

To be honest, it’s difficult deciding which of the two sounds is preferred.
For example, “Star Crossed” has that big sound and is totally dreamy. It drops in more experimental synth lines that keep the song interesting through the end.

One of the more notable soft tracks is “Katie Mae”, which boasts a melancholy cello fronted by a softly finger-plucked acoustic guitar. In each style, Miller-Phillips drops in slightly airy vocals on par with those of either Elliott Smith or Jeff Buckley.

Then there’s “I’m So Lonely I Could Cry”, a folk-pop track where guitar is backed by distant erratic experimental noise, perhaps produced by synth effects, electric violin, or even a simple electric guitar.

Gabriel Miller-Phillips has created something quite special with One For The Crow. The album is cohesive yet each song has the ability to stand on its own.
