Lady Lazarus: One Night Music Session

After Daytrotter surfaced in 2006, it seemed everyone wanted to get a piece of the session action. What was once common practice decades past has now come to be again; the session has returned in full force. The latest to catch my eye is One Night Music, which takes cue from Daytrotter by incorporating original artist renderings of many of the musicians which grace the session’s presence. The session in question is that of Lady Lazarus.

In “Color Opposition Theory” she sings a pleasant melody with sole accompaniment from accordion. Lady Lazarus is Melissa Ann Sweat from San Jose, whose songs are stripped down (at least here) with minimal instrumentation. Yet they are full and plush with life, orchestrated beautifully and crafted masterfully. One Night Sessions find Lady Lazarus in a kitchen with a handful of guests. “Uxiorial Demands”, “Sister Savior” and “Master And Servant” all find Lazarus on keyboard.

Typical songwriters find comfort in a guitar, but not Lady Lazarus, which makes her style of dreamy folk-pop quite refreshing. Too few artists craft solo music with piano, and even fewer with just accordion backing them.

Below you can watch two videos from her four-song session. Head over to One Night Sessions for the rest of her set. Also included is a download of her song “Sick Child” off her album Mantic, available now on bandcamp.
