Breathe Owl Breathe: Own Stunts [Video]

breathe-owl-breathe

Breathe Owl Breathe is Micah Middaugh, Trevor Hobbs, and Andréa Moreno-Beals. Together they live in a cabin in rural Michigan, which means it must be getting pretty cold there this time of year; poised to just get colder. Their new album is called Magic Central and it’s a righteous title as the album is quite magical. But perhaps a better descriptor is unexpected.

That’s what you get with their folk-inspired tunes — something a little different, but refreshingly good. It’s a trait that follows the band on their video for Magic Central opening track “Own Stunts”. There are the standard items: Micah and Andréa playing a little intro in the snow, the icicle structure Micah stands in. And then they throw in a brief bout of Micah boxing and cross-country skiing. Not to mention the strange dog-stick creature.

Middaugh’s voice is filled with the eerie complacency like that of Ryland Bouchard (The Robot Ate Me). In “Own Stunts” you can almost hear the emotion as he sings Mustache covers my lower lip / No one can tell that I’m trembling. But in the video, you see it in his eyes and you can feel it’s raw power. This all makes for one of the best (and most bizarre) videos of the year.
