The Half Open Sky Gives Us Hope: The Explorer [Album Review]

The Half Open Sky Gives Us Hope Explorer

The name The Half Open Sky Gives Us Hope sounds like a song you’d hear associated with a band like Explosions in the Sky or Thee Silver Mt. Zion, so it’s no surprise that this band also fits that ethereal classically-based and/or instrumental genres to which these two bands are occasionally associated. However, two key elements set The Half Open Sky Gives Us Hope apart; namely, the lack of epic noise from the former, maintaining a calmness to The Explorer, and the lack of folk sensibilities which allows the album to possess more of a classical nature than the latter.

The Half Open Sky Gives Us Hope

Throughout The Explorer, The Half Open Sky Gives Us Hope builds an aura of tranquility, from string-based foundations to the post-rock drones of electric guitar. Songs like “A Call To Arms” and “Wisdom Comes With Winters” build from piano/string introductions into monumental, all-encompassing tracks that swirl with audible beauty yet never overpower with the soft-loud-soft of contemporaries like EITS. These traits allow The Half Open Sky Gives Us Hope to maintain their classically-based roots while dabbling lightly in post-rock and indie-rock.

Albums like The Explorer allow the listener to transcend the mundane present, replacing it with a present filled with a heightened awareness and a fullness of being. The sheer immenseness of its beauty is, to an extent, unparalleled.
