Sometimes a song exudes sunshine. “Cranberry” by The Ruby Suns is one such a song. A frivolously feathered song of big band regality, singing sirens and all-together chaos, this new tune captures the noises our parents asked us to keep quiet when we were young. The antithetical mixing of simple synthesized backbeats and dripping vocals make for a somehow breezy explosion of rhythms. One could not help but feel better while and after listening to this song.

Having successfully melted together big island movements with taunting grooves and pulses, there is something to be said for the band’s ability towards a dazzling pop quality: a “Kokomo” for the new generation.

The Ruby Suns are keen to take us on a south pacific boat ride which, despite starting out brightly wonderful, soon shifts in the middle of the song to being oddly uncomfortable. Suddenly, one might feel a surprising loss of fullness in structure as the song leaks into insinuating techno bites. We’re rescued after only a few moments and dipped right back into the sun-light boat deck of a tropical electric dance party where playfulness and a refusal to do anything trumps all obnoxious productivity. Isn’t that what we all want to feel anyway, amidst these soon coming springtime days?

The first single from The Ruby Suns’ third album, entitled “Fight Softly” and due out March 2 on Sub Pop Records, “Cranberry” rings true of this band’s style, giving us a lovely taste of a promising album to come.
