Headlights: Get Going [Track Review]

Headlights

While nothing new, it’s still a bit odd to hear a Headlights song without Erin Fein at the vocal helm, as found on the group’s new single “Get Going”. Even as early as The Enemies EP from 2005, the group dabbled in giving Fein’s male counterpart, Tristan Wraight, a vocal lead. But her dominating vocal presence on some of the greatest tunes from their two LPs, Kill Them With Kindness and last year’s Some Racing, Some Stopping all but removed the memory that others occasionally snagged that role.

It’s sad, actually, because “Tokyo” and “Centuries” were easily the favorites off The Enemies. Well “Get Going” is Headlights’ new single off their upcoming LP Wildlife, and the focus has once again strayed to Wraight. While “Get Going” is no “Tokyo”, it does hold a similar power over the listener as other highlights from the Headlights catalog, like “TV” and “Cherry Tulips”. Perhaps this is a sign of what’s to come, the return of Wraight’s ability to create just as effectively dominating tracks as he did early on. I, for one, welcome it.

Wildlife is available now for preorder from Polyvinyl Records.
