Kickball [Feature Band]

Kickball (the band)

The folks in Kickball are masters at timing. Their songs include light elements of math rock, but it’s fairly subtle—not as prominent as, say, Battles, but still a viable part of the music found primarily in the slightly minimal but quite pointed guitar riffs and hefty, wild percussion. Even the vocals contain obscure timing on occasion. Just listen to “Fight” and you’ll get my drift.

One of my recent favorites is their 10” on white vinyl titled Everything Is A Miracle Nothing Is A Miracle Everything Is. “Fight” comes from the album, but prominence comes throughout. Similar to the wild titled Everything is the album which introduced me to the band: ABCDEFGHIJ. Both are packed with a similar style of song that I’ve become used to with artists like Wet Confetti.

Both albums are noteworthy; while my favorite and most highly recommended will remain the 10” for the repetition of the title in “Pocketknife” and the catchy vocals in “Hotelsmotels”, ABCDEFGHIJ maintains a viable force with tunes such as “Brown”, “Skinny Dipping” and “Mud”.

Listen for yourself; the genius behind Kickball’s lo-fi math-rock can be found below.
